Today I replaced lots of things on a bicycle a lady had saved from a dumpster for her 10 yr old daughter. All gear inner cables, second hand tyre, new rim tape, new front tyre and brake blocks on front and lube cables and bearings etc. One very happy lady and daughter plus gave me more than I asked for.

I did not work on anything, but a dentist worked on me for over an hour to get a upper molar out of my mouth. Last visit to a dentist was about 12 years ago. I have a great fear of dental pain, mostly needles in the mouth kind of stuff.

I didn't mind needles when I was younger but I had a bad experience. I told my dentist I didn't want to see the needles coming or feel the sticks. He said OK and I never saw or felt them again. He would keep the needle out of sight and spray a little of the Novocain on the gum or cheek before he stuck the needle in, sometimes with a little shake. They can do it if you ask them. I suppose it uses a bit more Novocain...

I have no fear of needles (at least non-cartoon-sized), and never put in any special requests or expressed any concerns. Had a bunch of work done (every 2 weeks for months) 5-6 years ago after 20 years of not seeing a dentist. Every time he would put some numbing stuff on swabs and let them sit for 5 minutes or so. Then he'd come back and give me a needle, which I never really saw coming. At worst I'd feel a tiny sting. The worst part for me was always holding my mouth open, but by the time I started thinking about it hurting, he'd say let's take a quick break. My regular cleanings with his hygienist actually hurt worse than a bunch of fillings and having wisdom teeth out or scaling and root planing. He was overwhelmingly voted best dentist in the area in a local poll last year... just as he retired. Dammit. Hope the new guy learned a bit from him because I've got a molar that hurts to put pressure on now.

It does not hurt, which is a good thing because I think they are out of the office till the 28th. I called several times today, no answer.

Sorry to hear of a disappointing performance after a long stretch of avoidance. Hope they get you fixed up quickly and painlessly once they're back. Seriously, ask like FrankenMech said if they are going to have to do a needle. At this point, it's the least they can do.

Seriously, ask like FrankenMech said if they are going to have to do a needle. At this point, it's the least they can do. For me it is the thought of "a needle in the mouth" that bothers me. Its right up there with shoving bamboo skewers under your fingernails. Years ago I had the needle score a direct hit on a nerve near the sinus cavity, it was extremely unpleasant. Worst pain I have ever felt, however you feel nothing else after that. As a matter of fact, I could not feel part of my upper lip after that incident for almost a month.
