So they pulled you over for doing the speed limit and ignored the car pulling out in front of you, classic.

He could have fined me quite a bit like they did my brother years ago on the same weekend. His was around $300 for doing 35 in a 45 zone. 25 mph is the max scooter speed in SC so technically I was 20 MPH OVER the posted speed limit.

It's all gone steadily downhill since then, a lot has changed. Memorial day weekend used to be the big kickoff for the 100 days of our summer season. It was a tradition for families to come here for this weekend. Most of the hotels now notify people making reservations for this week about this event. Sadly the families that unwittingly end up here on this weekend are blindsided by this spectacle event. You can actually see it in their eyes, most just check out and go home or elsewhere.

So the cop just verbally warned you for 20MPH over the scooter limit? Did you get a lecture about how many awful things they could do to you like charging you for riding a motorcycle without it registered and insured as a motorcycle and so on? That's how it is here. Once you pass the scooter speed limit, they can call it a motorcycle. That said, I've never been bothered about it. I got pulled over for 40 in a 25 on a sharp turn and the cop never said a word about the scooter part, just the speeding.
This is off topic, but you got me thinking about traffic stops now. My father got pulled over in a car yesterday. A cop had someone pulled over. He changed lanes (to the middle of 3, cop on shoulder) with a turn signal and slowed down about 10MPH he said. Another cop then pulled him over and told him that he legally had to get as far over as possible when there is an emergency vehicle, so since it was 3 lanes he had to be in the farthest over. I'm not sure if there was no median if you should go against traffic on the far shoulder? lol He said he would only give him a written warning this time, but told him this way he's in the system so if he does it again the officer will see that he's been warned and he will get a pay ticket. Why pull over someone trying to obey the law like that and write a warning? Could just say, I wanted to let you know that the law is to get all the way over and send him on his way... or leave him alone so he can get to work. Nowhere on the warning does it say that he moved over a lane, so if it ever happens again he'll get a pay ticket from a cop that thinks he doesn't try to move at all. He said it was real hard not to ask the cop if he just couldn't find anything better to do, but being disrespectful only makes things worse.

He said it was real hard not to ask the cop if he just couldn't find anything better to do, but being disrespectful only makes things worse. Yeah he let me go with a verbal. He was a very tall hulk of a state trooper, imported along with around 800+ other law enforcement officers just here to help police the festival. Our discussion was civil and respectful. I told him I am turning my camera off as I handed him my license and CWP, and let him know I was carrying. I mentioned that scooters are just my "thing". He started off asking if I knew the laws and I assured him I did. We discussed current SC scooter laws and the brand new SC scooter laws (that will not take effect for 18 months). I was surprised he actually knew the laws and knew that despite me wanting to have plates, and insurance the current laws will not allow it. He just wanted to make sure I was aware of the laws and told me to slow down, he seemed to be genuinely concerned. I think you have a better chance of getting off lightly if you man up to your violations rather than denial of wrongdoing. It sorta puts them in total control of the situation and allows them to throttle back so to speak. Of course if they are having a bad day for ANY reason you are screwed no matter what. Lol! I think you fathers situation happened because they are anal about that law, at least here they are anyway. LE pushed very hard for that law, and they seem to be very serious about it. So many people here ignore our relatively new "move over" law.

I made the mistake of doing that. The cars are what got me. Gotta be the ugliest collection of cars I've seen in one video. These donks or whatever make no sense to me. It's as if someone asks, how can I ruin my car with horrible ride, handling, and appearance... and this is the answer they came up with. That poor Mustang. At least it looks like a good spot if you need a set of regular wheels and tires that aren't rubber bands. They must be giving them away. Wait. About 30 years ago weren't people taking utilitarian compact pickups, dropping them to ridiculous ride heights making them useless for hauling anything other than passengers, slapping on tires so wide they couldn't be steered more than 20 degrees without the tires rubbing and thinking they wewe the coolest things ever? My inlaws from Texas via Louisana called them weed benders I remember. I think doing dumb things with vehicles will always be with us.

Myrtle Beach 2018 Harley week is pretty lame this year. It rained a lot yesterday and all it poured most all day today. Despite the intermittent threat of rain there are quite a few bikes out tonight, and LE is EVERYWHERE and ticketing for anything they can. They already have the barricades staged and ready to be deployed for the mayhem about to descend upon us this coming week, the sport bikes. I can hardly wait!

I feel your pain. We had a Hari Krishna parade and they blocked a main downtown street off for 20 minutes. But I survived.
Sorry to hear your pain, there is always a downside to living in a vacation location. When I worked in New York my office was in Times Square as well as all of the theaters we worked in. Spring vacation was a traffic jam of bodies that slowed down everything.

I'm a little sad to see an F-body like that, but those cars make me LOL. They remind me of something I watched a lot when I was young. imagehost

Is your local news inundated with reports about this? I've talked about the local beach town and how they think the car show ruins what should be a family friendly town and have had that in and out of the news at times for the last ~7 months. I think the entire town council would have simultaneous heart attacks if they had the things you've described going on. We just had people running around dressed up like bananas encouraging burnouts.

The whole issue is a double edge sword depending which side you are on. I officially ride the fence on these types of issues. It is true that up until around 15 years ago, memorial weekend was THE kickoff of our 100 day summer season. for decades It was traditionally a weekend that completely filled the hotels in Myrtle Beach and neighboring coastal cities with families and family oriented events. A nearby very small beach town called Atlantic beach, which is smack dab in the middle of a town called North Myrtle Beach started having a black biker festival. The festival EXPLODED in popularity, and over the years, spilled into the neighboring cities. The majority of the participants of the event have one goal, and that is to party, very, very hard. It quickly grew out of control here in MB, and public drinking, fights, shootings, public nudity, public sex, intimidation, damage to hotels, non payment at restaurants, intentional blocking of road ways for hours to have a party anywhere were common and the norm for many years. The number of people attending was staggering. Needless to say the families disappeared and were replaced by this hostile takeover. What used to be a peaceful but busy weekend, turned into a chaotic occupation of sorts. Many people here including myself resented this happening. It hurt the local economy, and was deemed as not worth it by most businesses. It got so bad that something had to be done to control it, somehow. Currently we are a few years into a planned program of law enforcement for the event. There are thousands of barricades that limit access to the strip to just a few places, A traffic control one way loop is implemented in the evening hours, and a police presence that is absolutely incredible. I am all for people coming here and having a great "time of their life" vacation. But you simply cannot say "no limits" do whatever you want to. I don't really like the restrictions they put into place, they are a major pain for me and my service business, but It is better off for EVERYONE this way. They have also implemented a similar system for the other bike and car shows here. Public safety takes precedence I guess. No doubt the tourist $$$ will be missed eventually, the rules will be relaxed, it will get crazy again, and the restrictions will be implemented again. It is a cycle that repeats itself over several decades.
