Worked on this girls 150cc scoot a few days ago. She had ridden it in the rain. It would pop and backfire when trying to start it. I checked that the timing marks were aligned properly, adj. valves but still popping. The spark looked strong so I switched CDI's out with a good one I had in my tool box and it fired right up. The CDI I had came from a 50cc but it worked so...
I rode it and it rode strong so I collected my cash and left. I get a call yesterday that it's doing the same thing again.
I'm curious if the voltage regulator would be the reason it's blowing CDI's.

I would suspect the magneto/stator before the regulator. It's wired directly to the CDI. I could be wrong, all my diagrams and stuff are on my computer that's messed up right now.

Think I'd check all the connections at the stator,CDI box, coil, ignition and kill switch before buying more parts.I've read that a GY6 CDI box works killer on 2 stroke Minerellis,so there is no reason the 50cc unit should'nt work..

Well, thanks for the tips guys but that girl decided to go with another guy. She thought I should replace the CDI and fix the issue for free sisnce I charged her the first time. I told her I could give her an hour's labor free but any parts were going to be on her. She declined. I rejoiced! ;D
I hate diagnosing electrical issues!
