i just got a 49cc scooter with the minarelli type engine. the rubber from the air box to carb was cracked so i removed it and used a free flow k/n type filter. this scooter has been parked an unknown amount of months. part throttle bog doesnt die just loses all power. reeds? too much air from new filter? bad gas? i drained the fuel tank. when it does throttle up she runs strong so i wasnt sure if it was the reeds. a rejet might be in order but i wouldnt think it would be that lean just from air cleaner. bad gas? i know the fuel i drained smelled bad and was discolored. im new to this type of 2 stroke so any help on troubleshooting would be great.
nice forum .. i looked for a long time before coming across this one

Glad you found us. Since it's sat for an unknown time period, and the fuel showed signs of being bad, I would suggest cleaning the carb and replacing the fuel filter. Even if it's not the problem, it's not a bad idea. I think you're going to need a larger main jet and possibly needle position and idle mixture adjustments. When I got my first scoot (minarelli 2T) I tried to swap on a K&N filter without up-jetting and I could get nothing but a bog most of the time, even though it appeared to run on the rich side with the stock airbox.

im going to try some fresh fuel. then maybe repositioning the needle, hopefully it will respond. with stock air filter in place speedo showed over 40 mph with myself and my son riding it " 220lbs maybe"?
ty for the reply. im very new to the scooter experience but have played with pocket bikes and most things motorized for many years

My guess is it's running out of fuel. If you could make it bog and then shut it off, the spark plug might confirm or deny this suspicion or you could just try a larger main jet and see what happens. Could also raise the needle to make it richer and see if it improves at all. The needle won't be the answer I don't believe, but it might help you diagnose it anyhow.

I have seen the vacuum petcocks gumming up here and causing a like symptom. I would try pulling the fuel line immediately after the "bog" to see if there is fuel present.

ty for the input. some disassembly required looks like. ill check the fuel related components soon. im very new to this type of engine design. it does seem to be starving for fuel . once i got it home it ran purdy good with no load. then bogged. altho i flushed everydrop of old gas from it. i shouldve just listened the first time and cleaned the carb properly....
thanx guys
