Okay before anyone says "shouldn't you get the scoots you have running," this was too good a deal. It was a Dad that was cleaning his storage shed and the son wouldn't get the scooter he abandoned. He had the worst picture and was asking for best offer. The ad started won't start. It was there for a week so Saturday I had some time so I emailed Friday to see if he had it, I asked what would he take. He said he was offered $250 but he needed to deliver 3 hours away and another offer of a laptop. I asked for hime to call so we could discuss what I might have. Well by the end of the call I was giving up a 32" flat screen I hadn't turned on in a year and my daughters old bike that hadn't see the road in 15 years. I got a 2007 TGB R50X with 5000 miles. It is in good shape. All its missing is the air box. I have learned that a complete bike is the best deal, finding the few missing pieces can kill you.
Today I started the cleaning. I discovered the handlebar surround is cracked but that can weld back fine. The gas tank was varnish so I really don't know how long it was sitting. Interesting that the fuel filter was empty and pristine as well as the carb inside, outside it was a mess. I wished I got a picture of the Mud Dauber all inside the tail section. I checked that they were gone before proceeding. I sprayed all of the jets and other holes, everything was perfect. It only has a 17.5 pilot and a 60 MJ but when I looked through the pilot it looked much larger than the 35 on the Roughhouse carb, maybe drilled to handle the no air box. The plug was a nice dark brown. leak down test was good and compression was 125psi. I cleaned the tank and washed it out, left it to dry.
In the CVT I still found the restrictor and only half of the variator and clutch bullies were being used. I found this strange because the father said he had wanted a BBK to make it go faster. I guess he wasn't a member here.
I must say these are well put together solid machines, probably worth the $2800 price new. Like the Roughhouse and Hyosung, Taiwan and Korea make okay scoots. I'm going to spend my day at work tomorrow reading Elektrey 's Bat outta Hell thread to see what I got myself in for.
