I was thinking of getting one of those universal windshields for winter riding. Anyone use one? Do they help keep the chill off? Just wondering

Lot of drag to put on your scoot, have you considered a full face helmet?

They fog up my glasses and I get claustrophobic. I wore my friends full face years ago. Didn't like it.

The windshields are actually known to add a little speed due to slipstreaming. Another bonus!

I have one on my daughter's scoot and one on my Spree. Plan on getting one for the new TaoTao as well. Yes it helps, provided you buy a taller one. My son who has Autism gets agitated a bit at higher speeds with the wind hitting his face, the windshield helped him adjust and stay focused.

However if I find a windshield that will lower my drag coefficient at a reasonable price I'd hit it in a second. On the other hand, when you say winter in MO, Iowa says really? ")

Brent had some experience with trying a windshield. He might give you his in a while. Never really tried one one scooter before. Just never really thought about it for speeds below 60mph. Anything that will make the ride more comfortable might be worth a shot if you can pick up a shield for the right price.

There are a few threads here with info if you do a search. The general thought is that they do keep the wind off and they do help with drag, probably because air moving around a human is real turbulent. I am an alien lizard infiltrator so I don't count I wear a full face helmet in winter and I wear glasses to cover my lizard eyes. I modified the helmet vents enough to provide some limited airflow through the helmet and somewhere for my breath to go that really helps keep the visor clear. It will start to fog a little bit when I have to stop for a long traffic light but I can pop it open to the first notch and solve that problem if needed. Usually it does not fog enough to bother. I also have 2 vent holes in the back of the helmet that do a good job to allow airflow in the summer to keep me cool. I cover them in winter. The holes and other vent mods void the hell out of the helmet warranty but I don't think they compromise safety.

I have an AFX FX Magnus helmet, which does have side vents and a front vent but it still fogs my glasses. All I do to prevent it from happening, is I crack open the bottom of the clear shield to let a little fresh air in. I only need to open it maybe a 1/4 inch, still blocks out all the wind just fine.

I have one that I put on during the colder months ad take off in the summer. they definitely help stay warm.
they both make you faster and slower. if there is a head wind they make you even slower than normal. with no wind they make you a bit faster. ad with a tail wind they act like a sail and make you a lot faster similar to doing a hill bomb

IMO you can't generalize and say all windshields do one thing or another for performance or comfort. It depends on the design. I used a large windshield that would cover most of my frontal area, because my sole reason for use was to stay warmer in the winter. I prefer the scoot without the windshield, but it really did help in very cold weather. Aside from all of the wind on the body, I could keep my visor open or cracked without being so uncomfortable and easily avoid a foggy faceshield. I found it to be miserable in very windy weather, because it catches wind and you move around more than usual. The shield is also really nice in light rain. Heavy rain; you're getting soaked regardless. Whatever you do, don't choose one that will direct air at your face/head. Make sure it's either tall enough or angled so that it's not directing wind there or you aren't going to like it. Now the performance question that is usually the main point of interest when windshields are brought up... I didn't really see a difference in my usual sitting up cruising speeds. The windshield had a larger frontal area, but should be more aerodynamic than I am. It may have slowed me a bit with strong winds that weren't directly head or tail winds. The main time I really noticed a difference was trying to tuck down. There was no longer any point in me tucking down to try and get more speed, because the windshield was there anyway. So if you tuck down a lot, you'll lose speed with a larger windshield. If you get a smaller windshield, you won't see the full advantage in cold weather, but you should at least get some advantage from tucking down. If you could find just the right one, you'd probably be able to go faster sitting up, or one design may make you faster tucked down than you'd go without the shield. my winsheild is of a design that sitting up I can feel buffeting at the top of my head and can see just over the top of it. with a slight tuck and a ball cap I can ride even in heavy rain and keep my face dry. the rest of me still gets soaked but I can see and my face doesn't get stung my the rain drops. (I know I should be wearing a helmet especially in less than optimal weather conditions) I also have an audio system, and the winsheild makes the music much more audible ate speed.
