Ok, first, if you're not at all interested in robotics and Sci-Fi....this is NOT the thread for you (you've been warned) . . . . We are apparently rushing towards the point when AI (Artificial Intelligence) first becomes self aware. Yeah....SkyNet (dramatic music here) I'm actually afraid of that point. It is currently projected that machines will become self-aware by 2045. When machines become self aware wouldn't their own survival become omnipotent? Think of how fast machines with supercomputers for brains and terabytes of memory could quickly overwhelm humans ability to control them.... Would their first thought be to wipe out humanity as portrayed in Terminator or Battlestar Gallactica? I know it sounds "Terminator-ish", but it seems the most logical outcome. I wonder if mankind will be terminated by machines ? If a machine actually has the ability to think for itself, reason and make completely random and environmental driven decisions what would make them less likely to want to be in control than humans? Maybe there have been other civilizations out there and as they advanced, that was their fate as well? Scientist are currently saying that when we finally make "first contact" with alien beings, they will be machines. Inernational Business Times If you ever watched Battlestar Gallatica (the 2005 Series), you can see what machines might be like by 2045. They could look and act human in every way...except with the ability to contain all human history and have all the sciences at their fingertips always instantly available. Lol...I'm kind of a science/robotics geek so don't laugh...too long. This is actually coming to reality quicker than many thought. Some links on Artificial Intelligence..... Speaking of AI, America's latest sinful indulgence. Starts slow but becomes Utterly addicting.

I've been watching Person of Interest on Netflix and it's about AI. Scary concept.

AI is a scary concept. They should send an army of AI robots to mars to build an infrastructure to make life on Mars sustainable for humans. Then we could go to Mars and finish the development and turn it into another planet for people to call home. All granted there IS some sort of water we can extract from the planet with greenhouse gases and all that..

All granted there IS some sort of water we can extract from the planet with greenhouse gases and all that.. I just wonder if by the time we could do that, they (the AI) would be so far advanced that they'd be going for humanity.... or for themselves? What is life in reality? The ability to think and be aware of yourself? Does it matter if that occurs in an organic being or an inorganic being? Remember, in the time it takes a human to perceive a movement, AI could make millions of calculations based on volumes of information as to any possible result of that motion and in nanoseconds, come up with responses to every single possibility. What I mean is that they could think so much faster and carry so much more information.....we'd be at a tremendous disadvantage if they turned hostile. In their eye, everything humans do would be moving in super slow motion.

Just ordered a case of can openers; a.k.a. self defense/personal protection for the future.
I think freedom will be the first casualty of increasing tech abilities. Cameras, sensors, and all sorts of devices so you can always be followed. If I can't even ride my automated hoverscooter without someone or something tracking my every move, the machines might as well terminate me. I live in a small town of 700, so I'm already annoyed when I go to larger towns and can't speed or misjudge a traffic light without robocop sending me a fine in the mail.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog ... Could AI's possibly have what constitutes; heart?

They would be stagnant,,with no innovation ,,,abstract thinking is way farther out that just knowing you're alive (so to speak),,,,how many of our members are patent owners? Invented something out of thin air ?,,,,developing a product or item takes a certain something that few people have (out of 6 billion ),,,most "builders here and on other boards" are mearly Mina birds following directions /instructions to achieve the desired results,,,not trying to run anyone down at all but there's a huge difference between buying an engine kit and assembling it and actually developing an idea into reality

There are license plate readers now that can read hundreds of plates per second. They are watching over freeways, on Police vehicles and at intersections all over the place. If that's your last straw, you're toast already. But I think what you're seeing now is just the very beginning of what's to come. Facial recognition as you go anywhere. Speech analyzers that can identify you by vocal patterns. Technology has a dark side for sure. But as of now, you don't really have to deal with Mr. Robocop....that's coming. In the near future, not only will "Robocop" send you a fine in the mail....said Robocop will pull you over.....hear you plea your case in court and then pass down your punishment. Look how fast we're moving toward autonomous, self driving vehicles. You, young man, are going to be a very annoyed person in the next twenty years or less. On the bright side (depending on how you see things) they removed most of the red light cameras in South Florida.

Good thoughts. Somehow you made me feel a tad better The point is pretty much moot since our thoughts are not our own anyway, but that of a computer simulated matrix. NASA and independant scientists have pretty much concluded that that's exactly what's happening here. Luckily(??), Elon Musk and Bank of America are going to break us out of it. The more scientists investigate String Theory- the way the universe works- the more computer code they find... www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/computer-simulation-world-matrix-scientists-elon-musk-artificial-intelligence-ai-a7347526.htmlwww.express.co.uk/life-style/science-technology/575653/The-Matrix-Universe-Planet-Earth-NASA-Scientist

Just a note for anyone that finds that interesting. That's a clip from the 2011 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate from the American Museum of Natural History. They do one each year and the 2016 debate was, "Is The Universe A Simulation?". They're interesting discussions (every year) IMO, and you can find them here : www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZIf you're into that, you may also want to check out the ASU Origins Project videos also on YouTube. Not specifically about this topic, but if you like long discussions/debates they have some interesting stuff as well.
