Forgot to take tranny case out of the dishwasher for a day or so. It's covered in brown cutting oil so it's not as bad as it looks. How to i remove the rust here, mainly in between the sealing ring groves, bearing is still smooth.

If it's just surface rust, buff it out. Use the same kind of buffing pad used to buff paint.

If surface light rust you can also use motor oil on a rag.
another would be to run it through the dishwasher again only this time take it out and put light oil on the machined surfaces to prevent rust.

Thanks for replying. Rust removal is new to me. I just discovered the vinegar trick for bolts last night. Magic Would these dremel bits suit? They're all I have. I'll try that Motoroil trick now

I'll try that Motoroil trick now Well vinegar is an acid which is why it works in this application. Once the job is complete, it is a good idea to remove the acid and replace it with a protective coating of oil. Otherwise, it will continue to disolve your parts. But first...you put scooter parts in a dishwasher? Are you kidding me? You must be single or, are soon about to be, ha ha. (Sounds like something I might do) The detergent is going to remove all of the protective oil from the metal surface...then...oxidation will begin. (Rust) Once you degrease parts it is always a good idea to protect them with a thin coat of oil, paint or what have you.

I usually rinse my plates then freeze them so I don't have dishes. This is the auto from my car btw

This is the auto from my car btw Question...what's the difference between being "single" and "very single"....just curious to learn :-) I can answer that...at least for me. If I am just "single" it means I am between girlfriends and, I am ready to host a date at my house at any time. Being "Very Single" means...I no longer give a crap and, maybe the toilet seat is up, and maybe it isn't. Maybe I mopped the floors yesterday...or maybe it has been a while and I don't give a crap? Maybe I wash my scooter parts in the dishwasher? Ha ha ha. I don't even have a dishwasher or, I actually might have done this a long time ago. Bill

Based on your definition of single I am terminally single. My dog doesn't even like going some of the rooms in my house. maybe I should just date blind women and just Fabreeze the snot out of the place.

Aluminum foil dipped in vinegar and rubbed on the surface can also be used to remove rust. A chemical reaction takes place that removes rust quickly.
I have been terminally single but a woman has lately taken an interest, so who knows. If a woman entered my house there would be a headline in the paper the next day: Woman found lost, wandering down a street, staggering around, babbling incoherently with amnesia such as from a profound shock...

I've just turned it upside down and into a jar of citric acid and vinegar so it's fully submerged. After seeing what it did to the bolts I figured I'd do this instead and toothbrush it off. Couldn't get in between the groves with the rag or dremel.

And, for what it's worth, aluminum foil does a nice job of cleaning rust off of chrome. It never occurred to me to add a little vinegar, though. I'll have to give that a try. If your chrome is very rusty, then the surface will be left pitted. But it'll still get rid of that rust color.

The vinegar acts as an electrolyte. You could use a salt solution too but salt is very bad. Once salt gets on a surface it stays forever.
