Here's another little mod that's pretty simple, but probably doesn't do anything.
I've seen a couple of folks upgrade from the tiny stock crankcase vent to a larger outlet. I'm not sure that it's necessary, but it won't hurt. I do know that I removed the PCV system from my car and tried running a single breather on one valve cover. The breather wasn't very open. I would get valve cover bolts loosening up all the time and the valves sounded funny at times. I didn't really think it was the problem, but tried swapping ot a big open K&N style breather and those symptoms went away. Obviously not being able to get rid of pressure efficiently can have some negative side effects.
Here's the stock one, pushed out some already. It can be removing by simply pulling it out with pliers. You may need to give it a turn to get it to break free.
I keep seeing big bulbous elbows used to replace the stock part. Yeah, they still do the job, but they're ugly. I had a 5/16" aluminum hose barb left over from a previous project on my car so I decided to give that a shot. Brass should work fine too and will likely be cheaper and much easier to find locally. McMaster-Carr sells the aluminum fittings if you can't find 'em. It doesn't really matter what size the base is for my mounting method. You could possibly thread it to 1/8" NPT, but it would be close.
I polished the barb while I still had something to hold onto and then cut it so I was left with only the barb portion. I used a grinder to taper the edge a little where it was cut.
I used a 19/64" drill bit to open the hole in the valve cover up just enough to squeeze the tapered section of the barb in. Be sure to check the size of your fitting and keep upsizing your drill bits then test fitting to make sure you don't go too big.
I finished it off by tapping the barb in with a rubber mallet. It's at least as secure as the stock piece with no glue necessary.
This simple mod has opened the crankcase vent up from roughly 1/8" inside diameter to 1/4" inside diameter.
I picked up a small filter from Pep Boys to keep dust and debris out for $10.
