Honda makes excellent stuff. I have had a 1970 Honda CB750, a 1980 CB900c, and a Honda XL500r. All excellent dependable bikes. A new Honda Scoot today in the 250 range would cost more than I paid for that brand new CB900c in 1980 though.

Greetings, New to scooters, got one free from one a relative - a 2005 Vento Triton R4. Looks like they bought it and ran it till it broke then shoved it in the corner of the garage to rot. Took it home, would not crank. Replaced battery which would not charge. Now it cranks. Will not fire. Pulled plug and checked for spark. No spark. Cleaned electrical ground on coil - now I have spark. Cranked engine - would not fire. Sprayed starting fluid in carb inlet and it fired. Took tank off and dumped gross old 2+ years sitting in the tank fuel. Replaced fuel lines and fuel filter, checked vacuum petcock - it works. Drained and clean oil tank, replaced lines. Went to fire it up - no start. Grrrrr...... Tried starting fluid again - does fire with starting fluid. I can see fuel being drawn through the clear fuel filter too. ( ) That made me start wondering. So then I cranked to the starter and put my thumb into the carb inlet and it fired right up. If I restrict the carb air inlet it works and I can vary rpm with how much air I let in with my thumb. Now what? I got an air leak somewhere??? HELP! I am not sure what to do next. I too am in the same boat. I just bought mines for $200, same make, model, year. The darn thing will not fire. I charged the battery -- broken relay replaced the starter relay (after finding a diagram from this awesome site :thumb: ) -- rotates I replaced the spark plug -- got a spark I took out the carburetor and sprayed it with carb cleaner -- I've never done that before I'm afraid it wasn't done well. I even tried to spray starter fluid in the carb -- still nothing. It sounds like it wants to turn start but it never fully does I'm going to do it again thoroughly tomorrow. Plus clean and replaced the filter and tank and the old gasoline that looked like ice tea Any tips??

Thanks alot, I cleaned the carb again, it actually sounds like it wants to start. The persons I bought it from had the petcock removed so I made sure it was clean and put it back in -- same thing -- the engine runs as if starting but never actually starts. I noticed the fuel switch isn't releasing any gas, through the fuel filter. So I tried with the starting fluid, and same thing. My battery died I tried kick starting and no luck. I don't know if its the vacuum line or what.

You said that the petcock was bypassed before. I assume that even then there was no fuel flowing into the filter? Can we assume that you have fuel in the tank? This may seem like a dumb question but it has been done before (trying to run an engine without fuel).
Lets say there is fuel in the tank. Could the filter be blocked?
Lets say there is fuel in the tank and the filter is not blocked. The problem could be the petcock itself being blocked. If debris got lodged at the diaphragm no amount of vacuum will release it. The solution for a bad petcock, in many cases, is replacement.
Another situation could be that there is a hole in the vacuum line. When I bought my scoot there was a pinhole in it and the engine just refused to start. After wrapping it with some tape it fired right up. Check the hose for holes.
Try pouring a little fuel into the carb through the fuel inlet line. This should be enough to start the scoot if fuel starvation is the issue. If it does start then you know you have a fuel supply problem.

If you have spark and compression and it is not firing - most likely it is the jets. There is a drain at the bottom of the fuel bowl on the carb. After trying to start the engine, open the screw there and see if any fuel comes out of the fuel bowl. If it has fuel in it - it is the jets.
Did you take the jets out and hold them up to a light? They are probably clogged and need sprayed with a solvent and then blown out - I used a some acetone (wifes finger nail polish) and soaked it awhile) then used one of those computer keyboard cleaner compressed air cans with the little red tube to blow compressed air into the jet orfice and it worked fine to unclog the jets. Hold it up to a bulb and presto - "I CAN SEE THE LIGHT!!". Just a thought.

ok, thanks for the tips, I will have to clean it yet again. Just to be on the safe side, I did have gas in there. I was frustrated and left it, for a week, school started again, so alot less time to work on it. I will on labor day. I'll let you know. I'm also going to test for compression any ideas what it should be? I read on a forum anything under 100 psi is bad, so I'm going to be looking for about 100 psi. I was also wondering where I can find acetone good to know, nail polish, who would of thought!

I did the compression test. The tester reead up to 160lbs psi. Tomorow Im going to replace the petcock valve and see where that gets me.

still zero luck, I added fuel to the fuel line manually, cleaned the carb follow the instructions in the carb cleaning post. replaced the petcock valve add new fuel, replaced the fuel line vaccuum lines. nothing... I noticed a hiss after I try to start her up though. any suggestions, if I should even contemplate on taking on task of fixing a low compression. The repair manual states it should be at 198psi, I just found out this morning.
