Got it for free from my cousin, a mid 50's 250cc DKW (part of former Auto Union) motorcycle. A few years ago my cousin and a bunch of his friends had bought a german cottage with a patch of land with it. Somewhere in the back of the piece of land was an old cow shed with in it a deep ditch for the cow's poo to collect or whatever. It was full of rubble and they decided to clean it out. At one moment they found a gas tank in between the rubble, and a wheel, and another wheel and then a chassis and all the rest of some old motorcycle. Turns out there was a fully dismanteled but complete motorcycle in there. He took it home and through the years had tried to sell it, get quotations here and there for a full or partial restoration...and finally decided to keep it with no clear purpose for it. This summer he came by my dad's and i was working on the cr500. We talked a bit about bikes and such and then he told me he had this old German motorcycle. He told me the story about it and then asked me if i wanted to have it since he didn't really know what to do with it. I was like yeah maybe because first i needed to find a place to store it and sell the 500. Got that all sorted out, so now i have a new project on my hands. This is how they look The motor is there but completely disassembled and in crates. I have no real plans for it yet. First I want to reassemble the motor and get it running, then do some basic maintenance. From there im going to decide what im want to do with it.

If I recall correctly,Yamaha's first motorcycle was a dead ringer of that one...

Awesome bike, certainly not a common beast. I hope you get it restored, it really has some nice lines to it.

What a cool thing to build. Would be great to get the mechanical parts sorted, then leave the panels how they are.

Looks very similar to the bsa bantam engine which was a copy of a German motorbike maybe even early mz engine. Pass it my way if you don't want it 😊

Im not sure what im gonna do with it...but quite certainly not restore it back to original. Maybe just the mechanical parts and keep the patina. Some new rims and spokes, media blast the aluminium parts. If the motor isn't complete or beyond repair i might throw an aircooled mx motor in.

When I was 10 or 11ish, around 1960 my family had a DKW car. It was a 2t manual shift with an automatic clutch. I don't know how the clutch worked but t did. It looked vaguely like a VW bug. I don't remember a lot about it but I do remember Mom putting oil in with the gas when she filled it up. When someone asked what DKW stood for she would answer "Don't Know What."

So i found a tag on the bike that lists some info. It says its a 1956 DKW rt250/2. Aparently this bike was sold new here in may 1956 in Holland and it has a dutch licence plate which is all a bit weird given the story behind it. Im gonna call the governmental road and traffic organization tomorrow and see whats up. It might have been stolen, been scrapped (on paper) or even exported!

You can remove rust spots on chrome with crumpled aluminum foil dipped in vinegar that is rubbed gently over the surface. It is a chemical reaction process.

Maybe i should wrap some tin foil around my head too so the government can't read my mind?
Im gonna try the tin foil vinegar rust remove tip also!
