I had decided that my New Years resolution was no new scoots until I got rid of some. Of course I was having one last look at CL on New Years Eve when a 2011 SR50 came up for $350. It was missing some of the front end plastics and was looking a little rough but was an SR50 Ditech which was a scoot I had been looking for. It was still 2018 so my resolution was still safe so I humored myself and made the call figuring that it was seized or carbureted. The owner said no it ran and he had ridden it a little, so off my dog and I went with groceries in the back of the van. The story was that he bought it in a lot at an impound auction with 22 Tao Tao's. He figured he would fix them up and CL them. He quickly realized that they weren't worth the effort they were in not good shape. He found someone that would pay $100 per Tao Tao to take them off his hands, but that he would fix the SR50 up. He ordered a new key switch to replace the one without a key. He then realized he was over his head and he should just quit while he was ahead. He was a great guy and had several ATV's in his shop. His father rebuilds heavy equipment so he knew what he was doing with those but 2 stroke scooters was a new world. While I was there he started it despite the fact the exhaust was hanging by one stud. It was load but ran okay. So $300 I had a new scoot to play on. Sorry no pictures.
When I searched the VIN it turns out its a 2014 with 9000 miles on it. It looked like it had been serviced and treated okay, except for it went down on its right side at some point. The right side damage was to the front plastics and probably knocked the exhaust loose. Of course instead of weatherproofing the garage yesterday I got it on the lift and pulled some plastics to see what it needed. I got the exhaust back by replacing the bent exhaust stud and got it bolted back on its mount. It started right up and ran well. I haven't taken a ride yet so I'll have to see. I do need to decide if it will be a naked scoot or get new plastics for it. Maybe it will just be topless with the front naked and the back not as naked. I'll ride it some before I put anymore effort into it.
