A friend told me of some excitement in his life last week. He builds and restores race cars (drag), classics, and customs. His paintwork is flawless, but he does occasionally use Rustoleum cans for touch up on bare metal. His large garage has a paint booth for serious work. It's cold there so he uses a torpedo heater and has always warmed paint cans in front of it briefly. He thinks that "R" changed its propellant to something that doesn't like that. So while in his spray booth a new spray can expressed its displeasure extremely loudly and blew out both garage doors. No flash damage, but he had ringing for 2 days.
Hot water from a sink is probably safer for can warming, but a do see some dumb experiments coming my way.

Blew out two doors? Is this one of them fishing stories? I was shopping for some "R" paint a couple weeks ago - there's such a myriad of different options for various applications I was bewildered. Wonder if they all contain that special ingredient... there may be some campfire fun coming our way this Summer! (no disclaimer?)

I used to warm paint cans on the top of the kerosene heater's cage. Never seemed like a great idea, and not something I would have recommended to others. Luckily, now I'm too cheap to ever heat the garage so I don't have to worry about this. lol

You can over-do it in hot water too. I grabbed a can that was "soaking" and gave it a shake. Weird BOOMP sound and the concave bottom was now convex. My leg got warm. I believe I pissed myself!

The real lesson here should be, Rust-Oleum is SHIT paint and no one should ever use it! I have never used such a shit product! So there😉

I haven't been there yet to see for myself. Probably 'bowed' them out as opposed to blowing them off the building. Anyway, Houseoffubar, what is your preferred rust preventative coating?

I have had much better success with Krylon and a couple others that slip my mind, but I have had enough complete disasters with Rust-Oleum, that I am angry at myself for being duped again. I built a Utility trailer for a friend, it was sweet, way too nice for hauling bikes and junk. I tig welded the entire thing, formed braces, four link type suspension and coilover shocks. I had it sand blasted, applied the primer and paint, them wired it up, installed all the lights, hardware etc. A month later my buddy dropped by with the trailer. He had not even used it yet, just parked it at home. It looked 30 years old, with rust patina everywhere. It had several good coats, and rusted right through them🙄 I have also had a few times, where the paint just NEVER cured! It was soft enough to leave fingerprints after days! I have never had so much trouble with any other paint

My experience with Rustoleum even in the 1990s on a couple of vehicles was the paint quickly lost it's gloss and became "chalky" in the weather
