I just found out a friend of mine has had Lyme disease for 15 years or so. It's degenerative, and there's no cure. If they had caught it early then he would have a chance. But they didn't find it until now, and he's in the late stages. Please get checked. Just in case.

Sorry to hear about your friend.
I have a close friend with Lyme's Disease... as far as anyone knows. He started having all sorts of issues like feeling mentally slow or cloudy, weak, dizzy, nauseated, or achy. This was around the same time that his dog died from some unexplained illness after she got out and he had to chase her into tall grass and weeds.
He has never tested positive for Lyme's Disease... but eventually he switched to a doctor that would listen to him and that seemed more concerned with getting him feeling better. That doctor decided to put him on antibiotics and other meds that would be used to treat Lyme's, saying that it wasn't risky to do so even if he didn't have Lyme's. He started feeling better, so they stuck with the treatment plan. As years passed, he was taken off of meds one at a time. I think a year or so ago he got totally off of the meds. Now he has bad days, but it's nothing like it was for a long time. So basically all signs point to him having Lyme's, but he has never tested positive and docs have said that happens sometimes.
Before the Lyme's treatments, he had all sorts of tests and scans and went to neurologists and I can't even recall who else. At one point they thought he had MS. He was constantly going to docs and getting nowhere.
Another note; there are different tests. One that he was told was more definitive was really expensive even with good insurance.

There's a movie "under our skin" that my friend told me about. He said it describes exactly what's happening to him. It's hard to watch. I don't know much about it, or the tests, but I know it can take down a well-respected man. A giant among men.

I have had it, deer tick, classic bullseye rash, antibiotics seems to have cleared up the rash but who knows if I still have it...
