Scooter is running fine on the road starts easily on starter motor. only done 30km so far. Just to recap it was a new 50cc head I used a metal head gasket as the thicker fibre and metal one has not arrived yet and 2 base gaskets torqued down to the normal 50cc torque specs. 18mm carb with 84 main jet at present diaphragm needle on highest notch and standard air box. Still need do a bit of fettling with carb when time permits. Thanks for advice everyone

Those needle positions are funny right? I had to make several and ended up sticking with the middle one. What elevation are you at? I'm assuming up there with a 84 MJ. I'm sea level in FL and in running a 90. Edit: I see your in Wales. I've been to Scotland and the UK, as seems like it would be a challenging environment for riding.

I've been running a stock head on a BBK for about 3 years. I did have to replace the crank after about 10k miles, but I don't know that it was a result of serious wear related to the head. Maybe a little shortened life by heavier piston weight. It was an very abusive 10k miles with me learning how to take care of the little scoot, not to mention the first ten years of it's life spent sitting in an old frat house basement.
After I replaced the crank I checked the compression, and it was over 150, but I'm pretty sure it was under 170. Carb installed, wide open with good battery, plugged into trickle charger.

I ended up upgrading from stock head to a 47mm valve head do to a small mishap with a spark plug and the stock head 🤣 I'm sure it's healthier to run the matching head for the 47mm BBK, but Does the higher compression lead to more performance?

Ive never heard any predetonation in mine despite never using above 87, so I doubt I'm seeing any huge gains? From what I've read it's a bigger deal on the 50mm+ kits, but I've never used one.
I too have a "spare head" caused by a broken plug. Can't be helped sometimes. 😆

Higher compression does lead to more performance, Probably not earthshattering peformance though. Higher compression also leads to more heat, more wear, and a higher octane requirement.
