Hi,
I was wondering if there was a best practice for the number of running hours between oil changes. My 170 GY6 does not have an odometer. I can throw a GPS on it when I need it, but usually there is nothing there. I put a little trail tech hours/tach on the engine mount to track hours. I can't see it while I'm riding but I can check it every once in a while. I know water craft go by hours, but is there such a thing for a GY6?

Let's say your average speed is approximately 40mph. If you ride your scooter 40 hours it will equal 1600 miles.

Given idling at stop lights, etc, a closer mph would be 30, and if you wanted a 1000 mile interval, you'd change at about 33 hours service. 33 hours X 30 mph == 999 miles, close enough to a 1k interval for most. FWIW. I also recommend(no particular reason) that both the strainer drain and the drain on the opposite side be removed to allow maximum amount changed. I figure getting as much used lube out is a 'good' thing. OTOH, the pickup to the pump has to fill to start feeding the cam followers/rocker arms. When cranking, cam cover off, I have seen oil start to flow quickly, so don't have much worry about oil starvation. If you consider the engine turning ~7000 rpm, 33 X 60 X 7300 should be 'ballpark' for number of revolutions - 14,454,000 revolutions in just 1000 miles. Quite a few more than most truck & car engines. IMO, they are hummingbirds, which do fly from USA to Central America in one shot... non-stop, so are pretty hardy flyers... tom
