Picked up a tap and die set from Harbor Freight. I know I’ll be needing it.

So I got the front part of the cases apart today and I think (first time, so be gentle) everything looks okay. Lots of cleaning to do still and have to get the gearbox cover off still, but I'm letting the penetrating oil soak for a day or so to give me my best shot. Here’s the stator side The only thing that looks concerning to me is the marks on the bearing and cases on the variator side. Is this just from them chattering as they came apart or is it likely that this occurred during use? Anything to be concerned about? Also, after I got the cases apart, I noticed this metal sleeve and rubber washer laying on the ground... anyone know where their home is?

Sleeve is the original spacer on the CVT side of the crank, first on before everything else, marks in the case are normal that’s from the machining of the cases when they were built.

Thanks, was worried I had some defect or something. Feeling pretty good about everything then. These things are dirty as hell though. Hopefully get them cleaned up nicely soon.

Take them down to the car wash and power wash them.

I feel like that's such an obvious and simple way to do it that I should be saying "that's what I planned on doing," but that's not true... You just saved me (and the gf) and my bathtub and sink from excessive amounts of Brake Kleen. Thank you sir

Cover them in engine degreaser, then blast them. Might take a few goes. If your stuck. Some of the heavy duty kitchen degreaser can work well. I'm not to blame if your wife catches you, using it! 😉

I may just wait until spring when I see some kids washing cars for field trip money and leave the cases with them.

Snapped the CVT cover bolt off in the case... the gear cover bolt either loosened a bit or started to bend and on its way to sheering off too. Gear case bolt also got stripped, so I backed off for now and will come back with a slightly bigger hex head and pound it in or just slot it and hit it with the impact driver. Probably slot it.

Torx bits are great for getting rounded off hex bolts out. They really bite into the head.

Small, but significant victory with 15 minutes I stole from studying today. I got the very stuck bolt holding the gear case cover unstuck today! I slotted it with a dremel disk and then pounded it with a flathead impact driver and it slowly worked its way out. At first I thought it was just twisting the head off, but then I saw threads and the head kept turning and eventually the little f**ker came right out. Great feeling! Really did not want to tap, helicoil, or time sert that hole. (Flipping off the bolt/hole, not you lovely people)

yeah i know that feeling all to well. i changed a front diff on a friends truck one time as a favor cause he needed it and hes a great guy. had to do it in his driveway after work and lets just say the first nite consisted of having to chisel every single one of his lug nuts off. i think you know how the rest of the job went. were still friends believe it or not but friend was not the f word we were using those few nites.

So I had a little time today and got some more bearings out of the gearbox. Turns out my blind bearing puller is complete junk and doesn't pull anything out of a hole. It has worked on 1/10 bearing I've tried pulling since I got it though....so I guess that was worth the $50... I've been using the "greasy paper towel" method to get the bearings out. Works great, just takes a little patience. The only parts I have left to deal with are one bearing in the cover and the center stand pin I believe. That center stand pin is stuck on there good. Two questions...I'm pretty sure I remember in one of Brent's videos him taking off the collar around the hole the crank comes out of on the variator side so that an over range would fit better. Is this correct? Also, I found this inscribed on the bottom of my case, near the gearbox. Any ideas what in the hell it means? Doesn't look like a Yamaha job.
