as the title says this winter ole scooty puff sr. is in desperate need of a paint job and i found the color i really want to go with this year finally. ive had a few ideas but couldnt decide as i wanted something visible and this is the one once i stumbled across it. problem is im not a painter im good at alot of things but never had a ton of exp painting with sprays. my time as a mechanic i started having to rattle can things at customer requests and had quite a few ppl that paint high dollar things tell me im in the wrong business including offer me a job after watching me spray things or see the end result. apparently i was doing something right. i had a painter that i had lined up to do the job as the guy is a fing pro when it comes to paint and i moved about 1500 miles away from him so im skeptical on letting anybody else paint anything i own. hes really good and hes a good guy. if i land a better job ill pay for him to come out and paint it if hes willing. but i dont think his wife will let him as she doesnt trust him around me even though she has known me for almost 20 years and knows theres nothing i do that would get him in trouble. basically shes a control freak and i dont like being around her so im not gonna pay for her to come too. or put up with her being around ugh.
so i talked to a few paint shops i knew of before when i used to live where im at again and they arent super interested in doing it as theyve gotten bigger and shot very high on the quotes including told me they really dont want to do it anyways. pretty much told it would be a back project no guarantee on how long it would take and id have to strip everything off the bike and bring it to them and send the rims to someone else for paint anyways. quotes were from 600-800 on the reasonable side but would probable be more than that to over 1200 bux for starting cost.
i was only asking to paint the pieces that are painted so the blue and yellow pieces. front fairing belly pan side pieces by seat spoiler and the top piece where cluster is at. i feel like they just legit dont want to paint it for some reason its a quick easy job especially with everything off. ive had quotes on getting full cars painted for less and they were even buying the paint with a faster turn around from much much larger shops.
i would have to source the paint source another company to paint the rims and strip the bike and still pay a ton of money i feel like i could buy the things to do it for much less and if it came out bad it would still be better than what it looks like now. with the money i save i could just repaint it next winter and keep getting better until it looks the way i want i guess and still be under the price of the low quotes. what do you guys think? paint it or pay it?
i want to paint the main body this color
it sounds like a weird combo but its a throwback to the bikes like these in the 90's one of my all time fav color schemes

If you want it painted, I say paint it yourself. Time to learn.
Thats what i would do anyway. People paint cars with zero experience

no way pay !! get yourself appropriate compressor; read up on spraying, research it, get appropriate gun etc. and do it yourself. won't cost near as much. visit paint shops, get advice from those who are willing, leave the rest behind. bound to be something to practice on when the time comes ur ready.

BTW, what color are you shooting for? You mentioned blue, provided a maroon color sample, and the throwback bike is purple. ?

Do you have any local colleges that teach auto body work? Schools back in for the year.

i said the areas that need painted are the blue and yellow areas the original painted surfaces. it was just to reference how little of the bike is actually gonna get paint. the color will be that purple. i guess technically its violet and most guys ive shown just call it purple so thats what it is to me.
also i think there might be around here but schools not really an option for me sadly. it would be an idea to maybe try to get one of them to use it as a paint test though. i could live with that if i cant get it right. im really tempted to try it my step brother and a couple of his buddies went to school for auto paint some of them actually did fairly well too i didnt think about talking to them. their pretty cheap to talk to as they are people and like beer. sucks they are about 2 hours away though id looked up some decent paint guns and could be able to get one for clear and one for paint cheaply. my painter in fl was always showing me ones he got on deals or was too good of a price to pass up and none of em were that expensive. a decent one could always be found around 35-50 bux and and at 75-100 bux id have more paint gun than i would know how to use anyways.
i could most likely source a water filter different air hose that flows a little less volume and is lighter 2 sprayers and the paint for less than 250 i could mostly splurge a little on some things and still be under 350. which really would be tempting to try in that price range. i could start painting alot of other things at that point and get more practice as projects go by. ive also seen powder coating can be done for around 100-150 bux at home including the paint which is most likely gonna be what it costs to powder coat the rims anyways. even if i dont like the neon yellow rims i can always redo anytime then at the cost of paint.

now you're talking , go for it . you might even find , if you're lucky, a decent gun ,hose etc. with only minor use looking brand new , at a pawn shop. I wouldn't get it if it doesn't look pretty much new though.

Sounds like a plan. I have got good results just using spray cans before. Done a couple of bikes like this. Can work out expensive doing a whole bike like that though.

ive done alot of reading and talking to some people that have some paint experience that i know lately and honestly it doesnt look like it will be that bad to do. i think im gonna go for it and try to butcher my way through it. i should be under 300 bux for the 3 stage paint for the vexing violet paint the basecoat and the clear coat the yellow paint for the rims and accents im not gonna bother with powder coating those yet and a good gravity feed sprayer. im only worried about keeping the painted parts warm after im done spraying. they would be in an outside shed that would be heated while im out there but im unsure if i would want to leave the heat on while im not out there. i may just bring the pieces inside if they arent going to stink real bad after they dry after the paint cycles. most likely they will so ill have to use a cheap passive way to heat it as its well insulated out there i just dont want to cause a fire hazzard or blast heat 24/7 for a shed with a portable heater. i have a pretty good idea of what im gonna do it worked well in the past for other work spaces and its fairly cheap so it should make a nice way to heat the work space and not feel guilty. ive got a good side job coming up whether i want to do it or not but i could most likely put a low power heater together for 50 bux or less. so i may still have room for a yasuni pipe to sweeten the deal. if there is a black friday sale on one i may just have some left over after its all said and done. well see if i get lucky but i may be able to get alot done for less than the bottom end of my best case scenario getting it painted. no matter what id be happier getting fresh i did bad paint and a yasuni c16. than i would buying bad paint and no c16. ill have an update on things soon but until then bad decisions will be made.

Go for it 👍 The main thing is getting the prep right. Take your time and get the best finish you can before painting. Otherwise no matter how good the paint goes on. It will show every imperfection. You can always cut back and repaint it not happy with a layer of paint.

hah anything is better than what it looks like now so its gonna be an improvement. id been doin alot of digging on spraying candy coats lately and honestly it looks almost impossible to mess up. i even seen a guy do a horrible job with the basecoat under the candy. it was uneven and lumpy with tons of overspray and it came out looking amazing. the texture under the candy actually added to the effect of the paint. if i dont like it i can always just do it again as another winter project.
i had some extra vehicle expenses pop up recently but luckily nothing major. im supposed to do a small side job this weekend for some extra funds so ill most likely be tackling my heat situation after that. and the end of this month im supposed to do a big job for him so when i do that i should be ordering the stuff i need to paint. then im gonna do some practicing and get used to it.
