Jet, before you start spending money throwing parts at it, I would try adjusting the valves. That doesn't sound like the usual symptoms of valves that are too tight, but it's possible. It can make your engine do some strange things. It won't cost you anything but time if you have a wrench, feeler gauges, and a pair of small vise grips. Here's a video on how to proceed. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=4ttech&action=display&thread=713RD

I see you found and fixed the problem. But I had very similar symptoms to where it wouldn't idle and when I come to a stop the motor would die. I read somewhere that the wires for the auto choke in the battery box could get pintched and cause it to run poorly. So I checked and no pintched wires, but the positive(+) wires were slightly loose. So I tightened them and never had the problem since.
Just another thing to keep in mind and look out for.

hello, just wanted to know if anyone can help me figure out what is going wrong with my taotao 50 scooter. It used to run great and always functioned well. I have had it for almost a year now and have managed to rack up 7000 plus miles. It started running really slow about two weeks back and then wouldn't start up in the morning. Once I got it started it ran like sh*t ever sense. I have been taking my other scooter to work and kinda just gave up on the tao50! I started it up today and it wouldn't even stay cranked and I couldn't keep it running. I don't know if this scooter is worth saving but I don't want to give up. plz help

:welcome: to the forum.
You should make sure all hoses are connected and nothing is cracked causing a leak. I'm also wondering if the diaphragm in the carb was seated properly at the factory. You'll have to remove the top of the carb to see it. Pay close attention and you'll notice a rubber tab and a certain way that it mounts in the carb. If it's not seated properly or damaged it can cause the problem you describe.

I think I have the same problem. 2012 50 CC Tao Tao will start and then die pretty quickly. Once it warms it will stay on but as soon as you take off the engine will slowly lose steam even with the throttle fully cranked, and the it dies. Fills like there isnt gas getting to engine. After 2-3 times of this it seems like it works itself our for a little bit and gets back to full speed for a mile or so but then the gas issue happens again and it dies. Could that be just a valve issue? I havent started looking at it yet. Not sure where to start. Any help appreciated

Look for any air leaks. Cracked intake, something loose, vacuum hose off, etc... Check the fuel system out. Lines, filter, and petcock. Check the float height. Clean the carb.

What should the float height be on a stock ATM carb?
