I just watched a DVD of Splash with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. I fixed up my old ancient desktop computer with a TV tuner card and an external DVD USB player to go along with the existing internal DVD drive, -my crap media center.

VHS> Otherwise a smart tv with a stick (roku etc) Can you still buy a VHS player? I have a bunch of old VHS tapes that I can't play anymore. I have not checked for a long time. The ex-wife bought and used one of those cleaning tapes on our VCR for the full tape instead of the 20 seconds she was supposed to. I usually maintained all the video equipment but she thought it was a simple job...
I have a smart TV connected to the internet but I never bought any sticks for it or even use it at all. I usually use my 'old computer media center' in my bedroom at night. An old movie from Prime video or DVD or music (MP3's) helps me go to sleep. Amazon prime has a strange selection of movies and TV programs. I have not figured out what they use for selection parameters, -maybe what is CHEAP is what they use. That would explain the ancient movies or grade B (or C,D,F,FF-) flicks. I will use the TV tuner card to watch an occasional football game. I can't stand the commercials on broadcast TV. I have an old dumb TV by my office computer that rarely even gets turned on except to watch an occasional football game also.

VCRs are fairly delicate and complicated mechanisms and the VHS tapes were delicate also.
I am finding DVDs are fairly prone to failure also. DVD quality and life seems to vary a lot. They seem to delaminate internally and cannot be read.
