Today I decided to change my motor oil & gear oil even though I only have 10 miles on my BD50QT-2A 49CC - scooter made by Jiangsu Baodiao. I dont trust the oil/ gear oil that comes from the factory,so I changed it today then rode over 20 miles no issues.
When should I change the oil/ gear oil again? I was thinking at 500 miles? just curious what your thoughts are?
I used Castrol 10w40 oil for the motor and Castrol 80/90 gear oil.
Also, down the road what are your thoughts on synthetic oil?

That and look at the oil, as it collects dirt it gets suspended in the oil and starts to darken. If it starts getting really dark or black change it.

Most who are average riders would change their oil roughly every 500 miles. Always at the start of the season. I change mine monthly just because it never hurts. The cost factor for 750ml of oil in the engine and a splash of gear oil really doesn't hurt when changing monthly for me. Plus it's satisfaction of knowing i keep a clean engine. Once drained, i'll pour the discard through a clean white coffee filter and check for metal bits and debris. Lets me know if i'm starting to wear on the engine or gears faster than usual

I laugh at those people when their shit blows up from being neglected. I always strain the used oil, and look for problems. I also de-can my car oil filters, just to be sure.

I like what 2stroked has to say. Odd looks are a sign of respect for the unknowing masses. I enjoy that. I too am OCD when it comes to analysis... That is anal, why-sis? Because...you can see what the dynamic cycle was, maybe.
Clear crankcase oil? Probably changed too soon. Wasted money. Not an issue, put that in your lawn mower.
Slightly settled brown/black with clearer on top? OKAY! Good timing.
Black oil draining, no clear? Dumb ass waited too long.
The interesting thing is metals accumulation. New engines get much! Normal, but DO NOT USE That OIL. It will have micro fragments of engine parts.
BTW...installing a magnetic oil plug is a good way to know what your cylinder is doing, over time. It will not pick up alumininum/aluminum, nor stainless...but will pick up iron and steel. Not a big thing, but if you have more iron accumulation than alum/ not a good sign.
My older brother used to weigh the iron, in grams...he built high compression small bock Chevy's that spun 9000 rpm. He always knew when to rebuild, based on compression drop and metals cycles and plug fouling/appearance.

We are in Thailand. We change gear lubes twice per year usually, if high use. A typical scooter gets 2 to 3 thousand KM per year...or more! That is 900 to 1800 miles. Many get high rpm use.
Crankcase oils are done more often. Six weeks on a daily driver. Once per year on a low use scoot. My Yamaha Mio is now 5 years old, oil changed annually. Only sees 3 or 4 km per day or less.
