Hello. I have a Piaggio Liberty 1997 50cc 2T and I have a problem with my rpms. When I turn on the light my rpms go too low and the engine seems to die. Also, it died today while I was waiting the green light. I tried to set higher the idle, but it doesn't help. If the lights are turned off, the engine runs perfect without any problem. Do you have any idea what can I do to fix this problem?

Easiest and cheapest fix would be to try LED bulbs, but if this is a new problem it,s likely to be the battery starting to age.

I tried with different batteries and the problem is still there.

Has it always done this or has it just started

Always, but I ignored it until today when the engine died. In the past I didn't know anything about scooters, so I thought that it was due to the low power of a 50cc engine. Maybe the fuel quantity pumped by the fuel valve is not enough while the lights are turned on.

Unless its an electronic fuel pump (highly doubt it) its not likely fuel related. I'd guess more so the R/R or something to do with the stator.

It's not an electronic fuel pump, it is a vaccum one. Can you explain please what is the R/R? I have never heard about R/R and I have no idea what it is.

You would need a multimeter and some electrical skills to get to root of your problem, try the led bulbs first.

When the magnets of the flywheel spin around the stator, it produces an alternating current and voltage. This voltage isn't really smooth, is dirty and worst yet, can't be used to directly charge the battery. So, enter the R/R. The R/R takes the dirty, jagged AC and smooths it, conditions it (regulates) and turns it to ~12-14 volts DC (rectifies it).

Ok, I got it. So I will try the led bulbs, if this will not solve the problem, I will ask the help of an electrician. Thank you so much, guys!

The 50cc is a very small engine and it gets a very small capacity generator. You just don't have that much electricity to work with. That said, it should have enough to handle a stock configuration. Maybe.
So you've got 3 possibilities 1. Bad design from the factory and all of that model would have the problem 2. Came from the factory good and something is broken 3. Came from the factory good and someone modified it.
Changing to LED headlights is one of these fantastic innovations that works. The headlight/'s are the biggest power hogs second only to the starter. Cant do much about the starter, besides, it only operates for a few seconds vs the headlights. So reducing the headlight draw can have a large impact.
Just be careful to check the actual specs on any LEDs you look at . Some are as big of power hogs as standards.
