Guys, I picked up a yamaha jog and the speedo reads like 6-7mph high (when it reads 36/7 I'm really only doing 30). It seems likeit would be right if I were running a Razz speedo (see pic). The speedo gear and drive gear are the same between the Razz and jog, obviously the cable won't change anything -- I'm thinking some possibly changed the "counter" in the cluster out of a Razz??? or are there any different speedo gears out there that I am not aware of that the previous owner may have changed to? He was running 3.5-10 tires instead of the stock 80/90-10 so it makes sense he would have changed something to "increase" what the speedo was reading. Help, it's driving me friggin' crazy.

Loads of threads on this. Yes they all read over by different amounts. I guess if this will work, it will depend on the gearing inside. I know my Speedo is about five miles an hour out. And just ride according.

Verify your speed with GPS. Put some new marks on the speedo face. Very few scoot speedometers read correctly.

Verify your speed with GPS. Put some new marks on the speedo face. Very few scoot speedometers read correctly. It’s verified, that’s how I know it’s so far off. I can’t believe that when it reads 37 and I’m actually going 30 via GPS is normal AND that just happens to be exactly where 30mph on a Razz is at. I get a couple mph, but 20+%?! That’s ridiculous! So a bone stock 40’ish mph Jog would read almost into the odometer on the speedo??? If so, the Engineers at Yamaha suck ass, lol.

Every one of my Honda’s is within 2mph, and that’s my worst bike. I purposely keep the stock front tire size for that reason.

My zuma is dead on for mph ,The vinos are within 2 mph .

My zuma is dead on for mph ,The vinos are within 2 mph . There we go. So the question... The wheel end parts are the same Razz to Jog, the cable is different but spins 1:1 from wheel end to the cluster, and the cluster seems to reads like it should on a 30mph cluster...seems like this all adds up to someone sticking a “counter” from a 30mph cluster into a 40mph cluster....that’s the best I can figure.... I wonder if anyone knows how to tell the difference since that’s not on the parts diagram.... Maybe it’s worth just buying one....

Speedometers in the U.S. must read exactly or fast by law on all vehicles, NEVER slow. Some scoots do read better than others. If you can get a replacement speedometer that reads better, go for it! It is probably easier to make some new marks. If you know one verified speed point a little proportional math calculation will give you close to any other point you want. It is real easy fifth grade math. Except for zero position pointer errors mechanical speedometers are usually off by a percentage. Digital speedometers have similar problems for different reasons. It takes two or more measurement points to get that zero and proportion error figured out. I suppose that might be sixth grade math...
We see scooter owners brag that their scoot reads perfect every time someone starts one of these speedo accuracy threads, usually the same guys. The truth is that it is usually easier for the manufacturer to just make them read fast. OEMs making large numbers of vehicles usually take more time to get their speedometers to read closer. Getting a speedometer certified is tricky, there are a large number of variables.

Of all me scooters past and current my Vinos &'89 Elite have bin dead accurate, our Movies are off by 1-2kph, my ZX50(70) is off by about 10percent across the speedo and my CFMoto e-Charm was off by 9+kph. You get use to it being off

I agree with all of that, but reading 25% off isn't normal on any of the dozens of scooters I've owned. A few mph, sure, I get that. The speedo pointing into the odometer when I'm travelling 40, not normal.
I'll figure out what is wrong and report back.

20-25% has been mentioned before...
Grossly off speedometers may have a piece of dirt or metal particle in the drive mechanism. A metal particle is very difficult to remove due to the strong magnets in the drive. Any rubbing in the drive mechanism or a broken spring will also cause abnormal readings. You can also check the odometer (usually reads in km) to see if it is off since that is a direct gear drive.

I will count the teeth on the drive gear (14T), and someone just a few miles from me is going to stop by, his Jog reads 1mph high according to GPS. I’m still thinking the culprit is the counter was swapped with a Razz 30mph speedo, I just can’t for the life of me figure out why you’d go through the trouble... If the front end parts check out, that’s the only thing it could be.

My digital speedo is way off on my Maddog. It reads that I am going slower than I am. I have seen adjustments you can make online but they have failed to work on mine. My wife's Metro is spot on. Guess I have to live with it.

Source of the problem was the counter (for speed and odometer), someone had swapped it with a Razz internal part for whatever reason in it's past. I confirmed this with a known good speedomter and was able to get a good speedo off ebay. When travelling 40 on GPS it now reads just a tick above 40. Glad I didn't take the "they are all just wrong” advice. All is well now, and my OCD irritation level is ok again
