I think you had it correct with your observation that the needle is too short or thin at the end, allowing the main jet to add fuel into the idle circuit. glad to hear you might have got it figured out. make sure to run the metering block test on this new carb, just to rule out any foul play from a clogged or leaky jet block. I really like the extra fuel at wot from the powerjet, and the bigger inlet diameter that gives more rpm than other carbs, but I still love my mikuni's. they're easy to tune and perform pretty well. a pkw of the same size will pull more rpms though. at least this is my experience.
