I can't say for sure yet if this is a performance mod or not, but I wanted to try it as the CV carbs give me several problems on my off-road ATV trikes that Ive built.
The bike Im trying this on is a taotao 50cc, with a ebay $35 70cc BBK and a ATV front end
I already had a 110cc, generic atv carb on hand, as well as a spare intake runner.
I put them on the bike, gave it choke and it started in a few kicks and it started right up.
After a few seconds I took the choke off and it stayed running.
When I gave it throttle it wanted to bog, which I half expected as I could not hook up the stock airbox to the atv carb...and removing the airbox from the CV carb requires using a much larger jet to compensate for all the extra air.
So I wrapped half of the air filter with a shop towel and took it for a spin. 31mph on flat ground (i weigh 260 pounds) and there was no weird issues or problems. It felt just slightly faster off the line, but that could be my imagination.
I am pretty certain that it needs a larger jet, both to let it run better and allow it to use all the air it can take in.
But even as it is, with the only adjustment being the shop towel over the air filter, it is 95% as good as the CV carb was. I think the fastest I saw with that carb (which did have larger jets to go with the BBK) was 34 or maybe 35mph.
Hopefully this weekend I can try some bigger jets and see if the top speed or acceleration improve. And over some time, see if this slide carb give me fewer issues than the CV carb. At the least, carb will be a little faster to remove/clean than the CV carb is.
