found a deal on a 2003 Piaggio BV200. went and got my motorcycle instruction permit at the DMV today. Now I have to get the thing to run.
It has some electrical issues. Been sitting for five years. Had some mice living in it. Mostly just thinking I'll post my updates as I troubleshoot this stuff unless there are some experts here.
It has an engine immobilizer system with special keys. Right now that's not working out right. I however did get it to turn over once, right after I put in a new fuse for one that was broken.
Some mice have chewed wires by the battery. Maybe they did elsewhere too.
From the service manual it's telling me to check the "immobilizer aerial", a ring around the ignition that transmits the codes of the keys f or verification. I'll check that next.
The manual says to not use non-original spark plugs because that can mess with the immobilizer system. (what??!) and guess what, it has an autolite plug in it (WHY OH WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT).
I'll put the NGK plug in tomorrow after I get one and see what happens with that immobilizer diagnostic code.

That looks in nice condition. Once the gremlins are sorted, it should be great.

Wiscootsin These orphan Scooters keep finding a way to you . Another Good Find Yea i think I'm gonna stop the orphan scooter adoption for awhile now. I should have enough to work on to keep busy. I need to start driving more!

That looks in nice condition. Once the gremlins are sorted, it should be great. Pros: always kept inside and maintained at a dealer Cons: mice lived in the garage. Came with all the service receipts and everything. Had three previous owners but this one has been since 2007. I'll replace the original tires once it's alive again.

Mice can cause havoc on the wiring. Would be worth pulling the panels off, just to check the bike over. They just love to chew stuff.

Took the front leg shield to check the status of the "immobilizer aerial."
Filled up a shopvac with mouse nest materials. And the wire on the immobilizer aerial was indeed chewed in two.
Cleaned it up and repaired that (and wrapped up another wire that was chewed). Then I started it...
"DAD MOUSE NESTS ARE COMING OUT!" what...
crud was coming out the cvt cover vent.
So had to take the whole side of the scooter apart to get the cover off. mice chewed the belt so i have to replace that. Jeez that's a pricey belt. Three separate mouse nests (so far).
I can't get the drive face off the driveshaft without either taking off part of the engine with the dipstick (which would let out all the oil) or potentially needing a castle tool to take the pieces apart to remove that half of the variator drive bit by bit. I'll check the service manual. Have some time to wait on parts now anyway.

You don't want to take the oil reservoir cover off. As screwy as Piaggio engines can be the variator should come out with the reservoir cover in place. It has a Leader engine with a larger cylinder and 4 valves. On my ET4 with the leader engine I had no trouble getting the variator off. As good as the body looks this would be a good keeper. If you want to sell it I would take a trip to Wisconsin to pick it up.

Ill try it later. Yea there aren't any cracks, just a scratch on the front fender. I might take the el cheapo luggage trunk off. Still need to take off more body panels to clean mouse junk, I can still smell the mouse urine behind the taillight...gross stuff. Is there an ongoing thread for posting pictures of mouse nests in scooters? Planning to keep this one!

My experience with the BV250 is the body panels are a puzzle that you don't want to do very often. The key is that center piece with the gas filler cover. You have to bend it to a point you think it will break. I left mine off until I was sure it was running perfectly. Edit: not sure what you know about Piaggio products but to get the front legsheild off you need to pull the emblem off and take the screw behind it off.

yea getting the front legshield off was weird. i'll try to clean the rest out tomorrow. Just put in my racing planet order with belt and tires. but i think that's all it should need to be driving safely down the road. one thing at a time.

Right now the odometer reads 73 total km. Now I know this is wrong. The guy said it was something like 5 or 6k. So, any idea how it would have gotten reset? Did the mice find the magic wire shorting sequence? Does it reset if left unpowered for 5 years? Confused a bit, not that it matters too much.
