Heading to work yesterday the service engine light came on and stayed on steady. Did the same thing on the return trip. Bike runs fine. Any thoughts on where to start troubleshooting the problem? As always, thanks in advance for your replies.

I guess you need to find the OBD port. You can buy the OBD readers quite cheaply now. You might be able to borrow one from someone you know.

Do a internet search. Looks like Yamaha may have used various versions of OBD, you have to figure out yours. Looks like the versions match various versions of automotive OBD. Some will give basic codes by inserting wire/paperclip jumpers, some by turning key on-off-on in a specific sequence.
OBD code reader is usually the best per Aeroxbud. Gotta figure out what you have.

Thank's guys. Yes on figuring out what I have. Also where to plug in to check it. I do not see an empty connector on the harness, unless I missed it. Had bike torn down to frame when I got it and did not see any open connectors.

It's normally found the battery area or glove box. It will have a cover on it.

I found the connector that is described in the service manual to hook the Yamaha Diagnostic tool to in the battery compartment area. I tried one other quick fix I found on u-tube. Unhook the negative terminal on battery, turn key to on. Wait 15 seconds. Tap negative harness terminal on negative battery terminal 3 times. Turn key to off position. Wait another 15 seconds. Connect negative cable to battery. Start bike up and see if light has gone out. Mine did not go out after startup. But riding to work today the light went out and has stayed out. So my conclusion is: Unhooking the negative battery cable trick worked, but took a few minutes of running. #2: If I do indeed have a problem, the light will return after some more riding. At the point I will invest in the Yamaha Fi diagnostic tool and try to find out what the cause is. Thank's again for all of your inputs.
