Want a phone charger or just a way to power electronics? Put a 12v-5v converter on your scoot. It helps if you can solder but that's not really necessary. Here's all you need. A wire splice and one of these.
Hook the positive to your ignition wire that goes to the CDI and a ground to the chassis or another ground wire. I soldered mine to the existing stock connection.

Most of us just mount a 12V power port on the scooter and plug in any converter needed for phones, GPS, etc.

That works. Just thought I'd offer a different perspective.

Hey frankenmech, how would I wire a 12v cigarette plug? Can I go off of the wires for the license plate light? Just use a test light and see which one is positive? I'm not great with electricity, one thing I dont know too much about.

Go right off the battery with a 10A circuit breaker to the cig lighter port. The breaker protects the port but gives you plenty of power. I use mine to power a fuel transfer pump and also as a place to plug in my battery charger or maintainer.

I did it like that last time and I think it messed up my stator or battery one

It can't mess anything up if you hook it up correctly.
+battery to circuit breaker through breaker, then to +terminal on cig lighter or power port, whatever you want to call it.
-terminal on power port or cig lighter to ground. -terminal on cig lighter or power port may be a black wire. The terminal types will vary with different styles of power ports. Some will have screw terminals, some wire tabs or spade terminals, some will have colored wires. Usually the package the power port comes in will have a picture of the connections.
I wish I could draw you a picture but it is just too simple to screw up.

I have a car style Cig lighter on my scoot like FrankenMech described. I chose a cig lighter because I do smoke and can light a cigar. Also, lots of adapters for cig lighters available. I drilled a hole in the plastic not far over the foot-board (high enough not to kick, but plenty of room behind it for the lighter and wires), wired directly to the battery with fuse. Works really well. 4 years and never had an issue with it.

I did it just like that, except I still do occasionally kick it (big feet & clumsy, see avatar).
