Advice please! my 2005 Vino 2-stroke scooter runs well but I have problems starting it, especially when not using it for a few days or weeks. It starts OK, then sputters out after 15 seconds or so. When I try restarting it, it catches feebly and sputters out quickly. Finally after about a dozen starts (and I have to give it gas constantly), it stays on. It runs fine after that, and restarting after parking somewhere is not a problem. Where's the problem? Cleaning the carburetor has been suggested; similarly, someone said it sounded like "compression" issues. Local shop has not found/fixed the problem so I'd like to be able to suggest where they should focus - or fix it myself if possible. Thanks in advance.

Change you're spark plug. It may be fouled out.

sounds like a gasket or seal leak. pull the covers off and look for a wet spot between head and cylinder, cylinder and cases, cases and intake, or crank seals.

Next time you stop Riding it try disconnecting the battery. That's always bin the sore spot for our Vinos as they are small as hell and unless you ride it every day or two it runs flat and takes a few goes before starting and stay running.

Thanks everyone for suggestions. I'll try these suggestions, starting with buying a new spark plug, later today. Leaky seals sounds like a probable diagnosis. About the battery: Wouldn't that be an issue only for the initial start? It does start, and I do make an effort to take it for rides to recharge the battery. Here's a recap of how it goes after not using the vino for about a week: Battery fires and bike starts and runs ok about 20 seconds, then dies / Battery fires and nothing catches (few times) / battery fires and engine coughs but dies (few times) / battery fires, engine coughs and starts, and dies quickly (few times) / battery fires, engine starts and stays on ONLY IF I keep giving it trickles of gas / ... after that bike runs but is slow to build/keep speed, until a block or so, and then it is fine! Any new ideas on my problem?

Fuel pump petcot, clogged idol jet. The pump is thebsilver thing running from gas tank and they go bad often as tonwere they will only pump a little fuel until maybe you get it warmed up and build greater vacuum . Idol yet because u said u have to jeep giving it Gas easy enough to clean and change .

Could also be the auto enricher isnt supplying enough fuel at start up..There is a tiny orifice in the float bowl that feeds it,they are easily clogged by old gummy gas,, I posted a pic of it at the bottom of Brent's 2stroke carb repair section; 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/363/carburetor-cleaning

Everyone, thanks for your comments and suggestions. In fact now that warm weather is here, I am using the scooter every couple days and I'm not finding the problem I wrote about. I will have to see what happens if/when it sits around for a few weeks without being used; perhaps the problem will return after a longer idle period.

Everyone, thanks for your help, and a solution has been found, which I'm sharing: It was the battery. A friend suggested it could be old, and it was - about 12 years old. I bought a new one and that issue of starting once, then needing to be kick-start-pumped, has gone away. Thank you, everyone, for trying to help.

Change you're spark plug. It may be fouled out. I would first make sure the carburetors clean and sounds like it could be an air fuel mixture adjustment along with the fuel pump maybe not getting the right PSI is a fuel make sure you have the right exhaust on it for the type of motor it has I had a similar problem I was had a 50cc on my scooter but my scooter was a 90cc when I changed it it rang good I'm sort of having the same problem because I put a pulse vacuum pump from a 4 cycle on it and I have trouble starting it but once I started it runs good so I'm waiting on a new pulse fuel pump because a four-stroke doesn't put out as much psi then a two-stroke pulse fuel pump make sure your gas is not more than a couple months old or it's no good
