I just bought another taotao and having issues keeping enough charge to start. I've tried 2 different batteries. I can Jump it and it runs fine. Bright headlight and all working gauges while its running, but as soon as I shut it off, it needs to be jumped again. I don't have a multimeter to do proper testing but does this sound like stator, or short, or what? Thanks.
Solved. Bad Bendix. 🧐

make sure you place the RIGHT hand on battery and LEFT hand on stator cover when doing a " Spock". hand placement is very important. sounds like a bad cell in the battery- hard to detect sometimes
which taotao do you have ?

Or a combo. You could throw money at random parts, but it might be worth getting an inexpensive multimeter, esp. if you have a harbor Freight near you www.harborfreight.com/7-function-digital-multimeter-63759.htmlif you search, you can find one of their 20% off coupons to make it even less expensive.

Multimeter is a pretty essential tool for anyone maintaining their own scoot. A good investment if you learn how to use it.

Bettanickel it is a bad battery. You can show 12v on a meter, but not have enough stored energy to twist the starter motor for more than a second or so. If it is bad enough, it won't have enough power to spin the armature fast(quickly) enough to engage the Bendix drive, it will just turn the armature. If worse, it won't even to that. Have you tried leaving the red wire disconnected when testing over night? With the large red(or black) cable disconnected, the machine cannot eat the power in the battery due to problems in wiring or components. If the battery goes dead over night, it is not a good battery. OTOH, if it has power(good) when re-connected, then you have a problem with something draining the battery that needs correction. tom

The thing that gets me scratching my head is that it will only start off of a RUNNING car battery, even while it seems to have enough power to spin the armateur while disconnected, it doesn't get enough juice to when jumping until the car is running, this is a new development. I used to be able to hook it to a non running scooter or car and start it. When its been running and jts warm, I can kill the engine a d it fires right back up, but a half hour later when it cools down, it needs another runninb jump...

I'm not sure what kind. Title just says taotao. Its got upgraded Cdi and carburetor. Quick litte sucker. Seems like first startup is slow. It seems like it takes a good few seconds to get up enough steam to get the start. I'll be getting a new battery and gear oil just to be safe when I get paid Friday, but all this added up, it just doesn't feel like battery to me. But I've been wrong before...

When I try to car start it while the car is not running, after 15 seconds or so I get a backfire. Clearly getting gas and spark.

you should be able to jump it from a car battery without a battery in the scooter (like, run it even briefly from the car battery). If you can't do that something else is wrong.
What does it do if you kick start?
