And i need help figuring all the electrical headaches as it appears previous owner had it permahotwired. There is no ignition switch to be found. Under front canopy i have a red, a green, black, and a black/blue wire with no harness clips. Black and red are twisted together, the green (which i know is ground and have since grounded and blue/black just floating around willy nilly. The fuse holder had been removed and lil red wire in battery box left unattached, battery reading 0.09 volts before attempting to charge, headlight filaments are kaput, starter only appears to have the red wire coming from the solenoid switch, and what i believe to be the cdi mounted under and behind battery box on frame is cracked and had 3 of the five wires broken/unattached. I had lights for about 30 seconds, kick start only no electronics to speak of. Can someone direct me? I reattached the obvious but no diagram has colors that match what I unearthed so idk what faster route to lights and guages is other than the flashlight i mounted on front and red bicycle flashers mounted on rear for “plausible deniability” purposes. Battery is a given, but what do i do with the under “hood” wires till i can replace the harness? What about the starter? Electric ignition? Is the cdi in need of replacing if cracked like coil packs on cars?

do turn signals work?
Are any of the bulbs functional or mostly broken? Sometimes high beam still works since the running light/low beam is always on a burns out on scooters.
The circuits that work the electric start on these always goes out. If it's a beater, make a beater solution. Wire a momentary switch directly to the two bolts on the starter solenoid. Make sure battery is connected to starter solenoid, etc.
Ignition key sets are about $15. You may need to move wires from the harness so that they line up and match the layout of your specific scooter, but it will work.

Sounds like a stolen scoot. Check the VIN to see if the scoot has been reported stolen. If it has, it won't be worth putting any effort and money into.

The ignition switch does two things when ON. It disconnects the ground wire to the ignition so the CDI can fire the coil and thus the spark plug. It also connects the battery B+ voltage to the instrument cluster, the brake switch, and maybe more. You should be able to start with the switch disconnected, but won't have cluster nor power to the lights. The headlight will light if the engine starts and the stator/rectifier/regulator is connected and functional. A lock set with ignition, gas cap, and bucket lock can be purchased for around $12-15 if you search a bit. If the CDI wires are disconnected, you'll have to go to the schematic (ON SITE) for the Taotao. It may not match exactly, but should be close enough for you to annotate any color changes for future reference and be able to figure out what should connect to whatever. The fuse is the feed for the cluster & lights, I think. It is not involved with the headlight, AFAIK. You won't have cluster lights, brake lights, nor turn signals nor gas gauge without the fuse being installed and intact. Plus the battery must have volts... tom
