I have always used Dedicated gear oil but I have come across this in the service, motor oil !? Is that what it means actual engine oil ?

Yeah, that's not uncommon. The viscosity of that motor oil is very similar to common viscosities of gear oils. They are rated a bit differently. I still prefer a gear oil. It may not really matter, but I like the idea of an oil designed for the task at hand.

If that's the manual for the prebug, things have changed a lot since then. The first time I serviced my wife's scooter. It said to use an oil viscosity rating that isn't even made any more! There is such a small amount of oil in the gear box. I prefer to use proper gear oil.
