Much head scratching and teeth sucking to be done on this one, apart from retracing the basic steps,I would try to run it on easy start for a few minutes to blow any cobwebs out, keep us updated.

Lots more head scratching has ensued... I ordered a replacement carburetor for the scooter, thinking that there may be an internal fuel leak, needle valve wear, or other issue that wasn't readily apparent. The replacement was for a Jog 50, and looks almost identical except it has an electric choke, a plastic instead of aluminum needle slide, and the adjustment for the idle speed is on the "front" side when installed, not the back. Otherwise it just dropped into place. After installing it, I went to start the bike and it took 5 kicks or so since the carb bowl was empty, but it fired up readily with no throttle, rev'ed up when I pulled back on the throttle, ran for about 5 seconds and... died. When it died, it really seemed like something just cut out and it stopped firing altogether - no popping or sputtering.
I've gotten it to do that again twice since then, usually after it sits for a long time or I disassemble something such as swapping the reed assembly. However, most of the time it just spins and makes no attempt to start. I checked the spark timing and function again, there's no blockage in the exhaust, both reed valve assemblies and carburetors exhibit the same behavior... I'm pretty stumped. So, the engine is back out to double-check everything... any suggestions would be appreciated!

Well... it works. It works perfectly. I really have no idea how, but it does. I had taken everything apart again to inspect, look for anything that could be even slightly off, found nothing, and let it sit for a couple months while other projects got some attention. Finally I figured that I may as well sell it for parts and reclaim some of the garage, so I put it all back together (original carb, reeds, new piston & rings - a combo that we tried numerous times) and decided to see if it would start, just for the hell of it. Well, it started up after a tiny bit of cranking, just as it has before when the carb was dry but then it just kept running. And running. And running. It idled roughly for about 10 min, then I adjusted the fuel mix and idle stop and it idled perfectly. I stopped the engine to put the plastics, seat & lights back on, and it started up great when that was done. It revved cleanly, so I took it around the block once, twice, etc and ended up putting something like 4 miles on it just cruising around the neighborhood, and it ran flawlessly the whole time.
The only different thing this time when rebuilding was the spark plug. I got a replacement a couple months ago on a whim, despite the one in the engine looking & testing fine, and always showing spark outside the engine. I think I remember replacing it when the scooter originally started having trouble 8 years or so ago, so it should have been basically new. Anyway, how could the old spark plug be fine for starting the engine when it's freshly put together, or the carb has been freshly rebuilt, but suddenly stop working after 5-10 seconds of running only to test fine again outside the engine immediately afterwards? I really have no idea.

That was an awesome thread. If it were me, I probably would have given up on it long ago. My 2 stroke lawn boy eats spark plugs. and ignition coils as well. Thanks for your update. your nephew is a lucky kid. thanks to all who followed this thread. spark plug...

Yea, I am still confounded, maybe the threat of selling was the motivation the scooter needed to get it's act together?

That is how my wife is too. She just wanted some attention. Never leave them out in the garage for six years.

If you have access to a black light you will be able to find the prints the gremlin left, hopefully trailing to the door. Geoff
