Generally 2000-3000 rpm+, just a little over idle. I depends on if it's a 2T or a 4poke. less than that may mean a problem with the clutch.

stock clutch springs are equivalent or just a notch lighter tension to most aftermarket soft tension springs .
If you are getting a 2 stroke pipe Street pipe non expansion stock low or medium strength work well Expansion pipe budget to mid grade medium to hard springs Expansion pipe high End high revving Hard springs
If you go with the more extreme pipes you may want to upgrade to a adjustable clutch so you can dial in the tension right to the pipes narrower power band.

They vary so much but of the 100's i worked on just 0ver 1000 they all start to lock up . That all depends on the tune of your motor and weights .. And that color code thing is a joke each manufacturer has a different color or answer .. Contra springs should be sold by spring pressure and length that's how i do it way more accurate ...

Malossi doesn't just color codes but gives you the gauge of the spring because the thicker the gauge the stronger the spring. If you go Here: wemalossistore.blob.core.windows.net/files/montaggio/pdm/7311401.pdf at the bottom of the manual they list all of the springs they sell. On the left side they give you the gauge of the spring. As for contra springs they give you what you need to know which spring is stiffer with this chart: As for other manufactures if you dug deep you could probably get the information for comparing their springs. What is more important is understanding what the springs do and how to use them to tune. Here is a great explanation that a member put together: 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/8213/cvt-operational-theory

That's a nice cheat sheet . I have a spring pressure gauge i use. It makes tuning a lot easier or just plain shimming a old spring worth doing cause you don't have to do it 100 times lol

Jegs just make yourself a base for the spring to set on ,It's just a valve spring tester ! You can buy one but a dedicated contra spring tester is like 250 / 400 bucks. This does the same thing you just use your press or drill press or even make a lever style fixture press from wood, when i got mine it was 80 bucks or so that was 5 years ago..

Thanks! I will look up the Jegs unit and see if I can duplicate something. I am always looking for Metrology ideas. I have both a drill press and a small home made 3T hydraulic press. Someday I may even have an arbor press, I keep looking at them and drooling. You know how that is...
I see that it is just a hydraulic cylinder and a pressure gauge: I have a big lathe that just needs to be powered up.... I love tools, I am currently getting pieces together to make a hot wire cutter for foam, rope, etc, etc. I bought some nichrome wire that may work and I have a nice 20A variac with various springs My problem is having enough space to store and use the tools I have plus the physical ability to use them now that I am OLD and fucked up.

I used a 300lb capable shipping scale (bathroom scale would work) and a drill press to check some springs. I don't think it's the greatest thing ever. A little too easy to make results vary, but it can at least get you some ballpark stats and you can choose whatever heights you want to test at. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSR04OjP6fU

As long as you compile your data using the same equipment and techniques ,no matter if it's accurate to the 10th or not your way ahead the game .
