Check the oil first. If there is lots of metal in there, it might be cheaper to get a replacement engine, as all the bottom end will probably need replacing.

It was running lean either with bad jetting or an air leak. What did it have for an air filter?

Check the oil first. If there is lots of metal in there, it might be cheaper to get a replacement engine, as all the bottom end will probably need replacing. I drained the oil and removed the screen oil filter, no metal fell out. I poked my finger inside the oil drain hole and didn't feel any metal pieces, though I couldn't really poke too far. The oil looked normal dirty, didn't seem weird or smell like fruity gas or have metal shards in it. I still can't get the piston case off from the crank case. It does come off for this engine type 1P57QMJ, right? Any suggestions? If I remove the flywheel, stator, and the cover, will I see the crank and the crank case? Something is preventing the flywheel from making a full clockwise turn. The piston, though shattered, seems to move in the cylinder smoothly. Could it be a broken gear? More youtube I guess, but any suggestions on what to try? especially how to remove the piston case.

Found a YouTube video that showed how to get a stuck gasket off (I slightly sharpened a paint scraper using a dollar store grinding stone, and worked a small piece of the gasket, and it started loosening), got the cylinder block off.
The connecting rod is bent, that's why the flywheel can't make a full turn. Surprisingly the cylinder seems to be in great shape, though the piston was completely shattered and seemed partly melted.
I ordered a flywheel puller and will try to take the crank case apart in a few days.

Got the flywheel puller and crankshaft chuck, dismantled engine, except didn't get crank shaft out yet. It looks pretty good so far, except the bent crank connecting rod.
I'm guessing the piston broke, and the pieces got stuck inside whole the crank was still turning, and bent the the connecting rod.
I will try to post photos after I remove the crankshaft.
The crank shaft looks pretty good, can just the connecting rod be replaced?

Since the entire crankshaft is inexpensive, it may be better to replace it. Are there different ones for 150cc vs the 50cc versions? I saw a few on Amazon that said they're for the 157QMJ engine (mine is 1P57QMJ). Once I get this one out, I'll at least be able to compare looks and basic sizes. The feet on my 3-prong gear pullers are too big, they don't insert under the gear that's keeping the crank shaft in. I have to devise something else, or get a $40 gear puller set from harbor freight and see if that works better.

This is the correct crank, and you are also accurate in that its normally easier and less expensive to simply replace the whole crank assembly... So much so that we don't even sell the individual crankshaft parts aside from bearings. Matt

I would much prefer to buy such an important part from a reputable dealer like parts for scooters. It's not a job I would want to do twice, because of poor quality parts.

I got the gear puller set, the legs are too thick to fit under the gear. Any tricks? I got a thin gear puller from advanced auto, too, that one is bending out of shape. This gear needs to be pulled out, right?
