Hi there, long time lurker here. Just bit the bullet and picked up a pair of 2005 Yamaha Vino's for me and my wife. The little downtown area we live in just lowered the speed limits to 25mph and now let golf carts use the roads. We figured its the perfect place to ride scooters. The two scooters were initially purchased by an older couple out west, and the never rode them. My wife's bike has 1440 miles on it, and the second owner bought it at 40 miles. The other bike was sold to another family and has even fewer miles, only 560. However the second one was stolen and spray painted horribly and dropped at some point. Its getting a complete retro style restoration, I will have pictures shortly in a build thread! The Higher mile bike runs great, will hold 38mph or more on a flat ground with my 170lbs on it. I know its had the cvt washer removed. The other bike isn't as peppy but I haven't worked on the engine much, rebuilt the carb and it stopped smoking, now just need to dial in the mix and idle a bit more. I am taking care of all the general maintenance before trying to add performance parts, new synthetic gear oil, new spark plugs, new cvt belts, Air filkters, etc.
In all the research I've done it seems like the more "go fast" bits that you install the more temperamental the bike gets. I have set my expectations low for performance, I am quite happy with the way the bike rides now, but a few more mph would be nice. If it was about going fast I would have bought a bigger bike. I don't really care to take off a cylinder and piston with under 1500 or 600 miles for a BBK and I don't really want to lose auto choke or oiling either. I am interested in a slightly louder exhaust for hers, but the louder the better for me (my Trans Am is pretty loud!) So after a lot of looking and reading I came to the following build conclusions:
Hers: (From scootertuning.ca) Polini Speed exhaust - sku 200.0333 Polini Variator HI-SPEED - sku 241.671 Possibly add the Cheap $30 Polini Front Pulley based on ya'lls input. Up jet stock carb and fine tune the variator if needed.
Mine: (Scooterpartsco.com) Malossi Racing exhaust - Part number : M3216691 Malossi Variator - Part number : 517075 Possibly the cheap $30 Malossi Front Pulley. tune stock carb and ride.
Do you think the bikes will need clutch upgrades? Is the Malossi Racing Exhaust too much pipe for 49cc? Are the Malossi Reed Valves worth it on a mild build? Will these bikes make enough power for the 17/40 gears? If you have any recommendations or suggestions I am all ears and eager to learn more about these sweet little two strokes. I have an extensive background in automotive tech but these scooters are pretty unique and wayyy easier on the wallet (so far!)
I've tried to use the search function and read as much as I can but the amount of threads is overwhelming. Hopefully my number of questions here isn't too overwhelming as well.
Thanks for having me, ride safe everyone,
Drew

I run the standard clutches on my vinos that have malossi 70 cc paired with malossi wild lion exhausts which are copies of the polini speed exhaust . That malossi racing exhaust/gianelli will work fine it really isnt that impressive compared to other exhausts it is a notch better than the polini speed exhaust but way below the yasuni . Skip the reed valves until you are fully maxed out with a racing motor . T match up better to the new pipes power bands Get the matching face plates to the variators and some slider weights in the 5 to 6 gram range to get you spinning up in the power band . Ideally you want to find the lightest weights that give you the best top speed and full belt travel. you will need stiffer clutch springs for the stock clutch to get better take off I used polini greens which is medium strength for a snappier take off. If you roll slow for 30 feet and then go fast you definetely need stiffer springs . The genuine mikuni 11/22 jets fit in the stock carb 70-75 worked best for me . guti ran the malossi racing exhaust ,tiny ran the stage 6 exhaust on a stock 50 cc with great results it is loud and more powerful . 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/12403/tinys-83-7kph-52mph-vino49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/27281/70mph-yamaha-vinoTo push gears you really need to upgrade the cylinder. The wall of wind holds you back as you increase speed . Stock 50cc If you want to push 45mph a variator upgrade and polini speed pipe and up jet in the carb If you want to push 50 mph follow Tinys build for a loud and proud pipe paired with a variator and up jetted carb

Thanks so much Zino! I've been reading a lot of your posts, guess I didn't make it back far enough in the posts to see Tinys build. I might not have remembered it without a photo of the bike in the thread to associate it with! 45-50mph would be absolutely perfect for me and my wife, the 38mph(gps says 45mph downhill) or so has been fine around where we live, but an honest 45mph would really expand the utility of the bikes without having to throw them on a trailer and bring them someplace to ride.
Do you have any recommendations on where to get a stage 6 exhaust? I can't seem to find it in stock, should I be looking for one listed for a zuma w/ horizontal minarelli?

Finding parts right now is hard. Guti runs the yasuni r and I do also on my zuma . It is a very powerful exhaust . It has a throatier sound my neighbors can hear me coming from a bout 1/2 mile away in the country when I flying down the road . The yasuni r is a better exhaust then the stage 6 I referenced Tinys post so you could see what a expansion pipe by itself could do. Most Zuma pipes will fit on the vino if the brackets are adjustable .
If you are going to upgrade exhausts buy temp gauges it will help you from making tuning mistakes .

Alright I've decided to get the Yasuni R over the Malossi. Do you know a good place to order the jets? I've been on a lot of websites trying to find a set that starts with a 65 or 70 and has intervals up to 95 or so just to be safe, and not found many options. Also, is an aftermarket ignition coil worth anything on a vino? I was also under the impression the stock airbox and filter are sufficient for most builds, is this correct? Thanks again!

Jetsrus has high quality mikuni jets That is where I have got mine from . This is the right size for the tekei carb I would buy 67.5 70 72.5 and 75 so you can dial t in real tight www.jetsrus.com/a_jets_by_carburetor_type/jets_mikuni_VM11-22_main.htmI orrdered mikuni jets by Glixal off Amazon 75 mikuni knockoff Glixal is not the same as a 75 mikuni see picture so you have to order a wider range

Skip the Ignition till you go to a Race Build it is overkill for a stock build the stock ignition works all the way to 11k rpms. I run Stock airbox on all my builds it is easier for tuning and provides plenty of flow for performance Open filters are a pia .

Zino you're a legend. My custom paint job is 60% done on my bike, and we got our stimulus check in the mail today. Its officially scooter season.

So while working on my bike and also riding my wife's I noticed a metallic buzz noise that comes and goes on mine. It may be audible because the plastics are all removed. It buzzes when revving, and also while cruising at sustained speed. I checked for loose exhaust bolts, and also tried to pinpoint the source on the center stand, no luck. It only has 570 miles on it. I would hope that its not a bearing or any internal issue. I have a video youtu.be/U7wCH4JgwPcWonder if this is normal and if anyone has had this noise happen on their vino or minarelli 2t. Thanks, safe riding yall. Edit: buzzing was a loose washer for the rear rack.

After getting my bike back together its not making the noise that it was. Our AC went out and that seriously set back our scooter budget, but my bike is 100% painted. Just needs a week or two of curing and I can hit it with a quick wetsand and polish. I will have a Build thread up shortly!

Does upping the stock main jet have any positive effects on a stock vino without the cvt limiting washer and stock, restriction-less exhaust? I can't seem to find any solid evidence the bikes came with restricted exhausts but neither has a reducer in their pipe. Just seems odd that the 49cc zuma had a much larger main jet with the same displacement and I assume a same sized carb.

The zuma airbox and the vino airbox flow different so they dont need the same jetting .
If you just are running a stock air box and a restriction free pipe there is no advantage to going richer on the main jet .
Just a notch higher on the needle if needed by lowering the clip will richen up where you spend most of your cruising.

Congrats on two Vinos, they are hard to come by these days. I'm on my second, I just love the 2t! I only removed the variator spacer and exhaust restrictor and it does 40mph reliably. I'm done tampering, just riding…
Keep us updated on your builds!
