So I live close to Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. Relatively close anyway. Today I went for a ride. There are three power plants very near each other. First up is TMI. Second on my tour was York Haven hydro electric dam. Built very early in electrical history by mules dragging carts of stone into the river to form a dam at a rapids. Finally I went past Brunner Island coal fired power plant. All in all about a forty mile round trip. Zero issues and I even found a riding mower for free along the way. I went back in the truck for that.

Cool. When I initially planned to go to Centralia, I was going to take a route to go down River Rd so I could see Three Mile Island and check out Gold Mine Rd (twisty). I ended up going on more of a whim on a day trip instead of an overnight, so I had to take the quickest route so I'd have time to explore around Centralia and missed out on that stuff.

Maybe next time I’ll head west instead and tour Gettysburg battlefields. I’m sure tourists will enjoy me buzzing around the serenity of the park.

Now that TMI is shut down it’s not as majestic as it was. There was a magic to the enormous clouds of steam the units put out of the cooling towers. Now they are just concrete hulks. I’ve been on a 14’ boat in the river along the plant and been able to look up inside the older ones that were decommissioned long ago, you can get close enough to see sky from the open edges of the bottom.

I wouldn't make a trip just to see the towers, but I thought it would be neat to see if in the area. Heck, there's really nothing to see in Centralia, but I've read and watched so much about it that I had to see the place for myself. Plus, mountains are a bit of a novelty to me after living on flat land my entire life.

Not too far past Centrailia (NW) you'll find Susquehanna nuke plant, 2 towers, and a lot of roads along that river all the way down to Connewingo Dam where the river meets the Chesapeake Bay, sometimes called the drowned Susquehanna Valley. NE from the Sus. nukes, near intersection on I80 & I81 is a mountain ridge wind farm and there is a dirt road right up to the things. No distant fences or visible armed guards.

So not all power is made with a piston? Wow! Haha
Neat stuff.
This gives me a great idea! I am going to take the forum on a tour of Detroit this summer. Nothing will instill a sense of gratitude like pictures of a completely gutted, former thriving metropolis.
A lot of cool sites to see from days gone’. Detroit is the stuff of one of those “new age” or “grungy industrial” photographers dreams.

When I took Rt 9 up to Delaware City on a trip to Wilmington with the TMAX, I could see the Salem plant in NJ. I first noticed it when I went to a wildlife refuge in Smyrna, DE, but it's much easier to see as you go north.
