Hello all,
So I may not be in the right place, and this may have already been archived....
But...
I am going to venture out to say that this site is SO massive, and my search was probably not in in the right lingo/context:
I have recently been abducted into the scooter life due to a moving neighbor leaving a 2001 Vino in the alley. Now it's plated and mine.
I have removed that rubber 90 degree angle thing off my airbox. I did this because the diameter looks like a governor (of sorts.) My question is, is this safe to do? I mean, it kinda feels a little peppier..
I'm not really looking to make it a racer. I want it to last. If that rubber thing is important, I will re-install it.
Thanks!
Jonny...

Oops! I forgot to mention! It's the rubber boot to ambient air, not the one from the box to the carb. Albeit, I did just watch a video about the box to carb boot being a restrictor... So maybe I will just put the ambient back on.

It is jetted for the snorkel in If you are keeping it stock you wont be turning a ton of rpms so you should be ok.
there are 2 restrictions to hold speed down one in the stock exhaust that restricts exhaust flow and the second that I refer to is a wedding band between the the variator halves that keep it from getting all the way in top gear.
Stock restricted vinos have a hard time hitting 30 miles per hour with both out you get closer to 40 mph

Stock restricted vinos have a hard time hitting 30 miles per hour with both out you get closer to 40 mph So the spacer was already removed. I didn't notice much difference with the "snorkel" out, except it sounded like a dirt bike. lol. I heard the speedometers are a little off, but this Vino goes past the 45mph mark (if there was actually a mark there.) I've been using it for my 5 min commute to work. I will cruise around a few of the busier roads with it, but I did notice the brakes are not probably the best for traffic. This whole experience lead me to a Honda PCX, and I like that a lot. I did get the Vino for $1, and everything works on it (now.)

45mph is very good Tells me you are derestricted on both exhaust and variator
You can adjust both front and back brakes there is adjustment nut by the tire (clockwise for less travel on the brake handles) .
Depending on the miles you may need new brakes I am at 4k miles and I am still on original pads I have 2mm left and spec is change them at .8 mm But I dont do stop and go driving, I live in the country .

I got it with 2150 on it. The brake "indicators" show they are fine, I will mess with the adjustment. How long does a 2-stroke last before you have to rebuild it?

Hi rocket, a two stroke top end can last a long time with good maintenance and proper tuning. In my experience, if you drive it up on the torque curve, power on the pipe...a top end can last a long time. Hmmm...time, miles or whatever. How you winter it...Cleaning, tuning, always stay in the know of your scoots condition and play with it.
You are correct, that this site is huge and often hard to find what you are looking for...My recommendation is to follow those who have like scooters and interests. Or simply ask as you have done! Many here are super helpful. Welcome to the forum!

Properly looked after a 2t will be good for 20,000 miles most don't,t make it because of misuse. Start a build thread so we can help you, brakes !!! don't,t " mess" with the adjustment learn how to do it properly, use the directory icon on the left of this page for self help,or we can walk you through it in your build thread.

Geoff Geoff's right. The first part that wears out and needs an engine disassembly are the piston rings. I'd say after 8,000-10,000mi or so. By the way, changing piston rings it a real easy, quick and cheap job on those air cooled engines so nothing to worry about. Right jetting, proper maintenance and knowledgeable hands working on it makes it able to survive an armageddon!
