So this is two problems...I think lol.
Firstly, my brake light comes on when I use the front brakes (lever on the right), but never when I use the rear brakes. I've just been making sure to use the front brake always so I don't get a ticket. Has anybody else encountered this problem? It's been like that since I got the bike.
The second issue just started happening more recently. Sometimes the headlight and display lights on the console won't come on when I start it, or I'll notice at some point while riding that they're not on. If I smack the console a couple times everything lights back up though.
It's late here so I'll be taking it apart to look after work tomorrow, but just figured I'd be preemptive and see if anybody knew what these problems are, or maybe had some idea. Thanks!

There is a brake switch (or should be) on each lever. It sounds like the one on the rear brake lever is not functional or not connected. Take a look at the connections first. These switches are simple on/off switches. You can do a continuity check to see if they work. Just put one probe on each of the 2 terminals and you should have continuity indicated by a beep or see resistance go to 0 when the lever is squeezed and then no continuity when the lever is released. If you don't get that result, the switch is probably bad. It could be a contact issue as well. You may be able to look it over and see what's supposed to contact the switch and make sure it actually does.
The dash issue sounds like a loose connection. If you're lucky, you may find a poor connection externally... in the harness connection for example. It's possible that there's something loose inside the dash, which may be harder to fix.

What he said, and I would add that given it sometimes responds to a good thwack you may find connectors that have not been pushed fully home. That could also apply to the left brake switch. Follow the wires from the switch to their connectors and examine for good contact, before or after checking the switch. The connectors are a relatively easy spot to connect the VOM to check switch operation also. tom

Thanks, guys. I've haven't had the time yet to pull off those dreaded plastics but I now have some ideas to look for when I do!
