I have been perusing the posts concerning cold hard starting. It seems to be a common disease relative to 50cc Chinese scooters.
Most of the suggested remedies/solutions are not relative to my situation. My scooter has a new plug. My problem is not likely too thick oil in that the starter is spinning the engine over just fine and it will start if I pull the vacuum hose off the intake manifold and inject 1/2 an eye dropper of gas directly into the combustion chamber. However, injecting gas into the intake manifold is less than an ideal situation in that (1) I need to be at home to do that (or carry an bottle w/eye dropper with me). (2) The seat/bucket must be out of the scooter in able to access the engine.
Note that when I say "cold" I mean only about 60 degrees Fahrenheit at the lowest. Also, I have noted that although the engine starts and runs fine when warm, it must very warm to run well (also seems to be a common disease with Chinese scooters). It is too bad there is not a manual choke.
So, has anyone figured out how to make these Chinese scooters (with auto-choke) cold-start better?

If you have had it for a while, and it slowly got harder to start, it mwy be that the 'pinhole' in the float bowl is not allowing the refill of the chamber that holds fuel for the 'byvalve'. The byvalve has a brass colored tube that protrudes down from the bowl gasket surface into a chamber. That chamber has a tiny hole that allows fuel to fill the chamber slowly over time. If the pinhole is clogged, your byvalve(choke equivalent) can not and will not work as it cannot supply fuel. The symptom of hard starting cold that is helped by a dab of fuel indicates a lean condition and likely byvalve failure to provide fuel. I would remove the float bowl, and look at the area around the hole, check the pinhole, and clear it if clogged. I have squirted choke/carb cleaner into the hole using the straw, with my finger helping seal the straw so the fluid would be forced out the pinhole. If I got no flow, I would use a safety pin or straight pin to poke into the hole until choke cleaner would at least come out under pressure. I think the hole is small to limit fuel filling so the engine can run w/o problem. If it filled quickly, it might lean the carb?? tom

I started it this A.M. with one kick on the kick starter. It started despite sitting all night. I suspect at this point that it has to sit for more than one day before there is a starting problem inasmuch as when I did the original post above, it had sat for at least a week. At this stage, I am going to call the problem solved. Thanks for the input anyway.

When did you last check and set your valve clearance?
