Hi all, I have a post named not good under 4 stroke troubleshooting. Not many folks have ran into it so I'm posting here. Short story is I was stranded and I used the kickstart and there was a lot of resistance but I forced it and was able to start it.I have found the problem generally but I need to know what I broke .Be it the crank, con rod, valve or something else I'd like to know what is most likely to be the problem.I've never tried to fully tear an engine apart so I'm trying not to do that.
If you have any ideas on my 4 stroke I'd appreciate it if you'd give my post a look under 4 stroke troubleshooting named Not good.Thanx for any help.

Did you check the kickstarter?

Yes my kick starter works fine still and I removed the cvt cover and the clutch and rollers seem fine. I did force the kickstarter trying to get it running and now somewhere along the engine bits something is dragging and catching somewhere that makes a clicking noise and saps the power.

Can you turn the crank by hand with the plug removed?

With the plug in I can turn the engine but along that path it binds/hits something and I have to use a bit more force to get past that part of the crank cycle.I'm sure it will turn easier with the plug out but I'll still have the binding problem. I can pull the plug and do as you recommend if that'll help.

Maybe you've bend a rod? Not sure if thats a thing with atmospheric 4t's🤷 Dunno anything about em tbh, just can judge from common sense. Maybe the timing chain got messed up? Id do a compression test and check the cam timing.

Jstich,if this helps I am new to 4t but I managed to tear down and rebuild to running first time round without much trouble the timing chain and valve setting are off putting but doable,I didn't,t split the cases or crank though.

Thanks guys. Is the cam timing you're talking about involve the mark on the case and the T mark on the crank lining up?When I was lining up the T mak with the mark on the case it was about an inch (2.5 cm)higher than the mark on the case. If I remember correctly the T mark and the mark on the case basically line up with just a little bit of play. The T mark on the crank is a bit higher than that now at the 'rested' position.

The T Mark should be in line with the mark on the case. Then the two circular holes in the cam sprocket should then line up with the top of the cylinder. There should be some free play on the rockers.

I checked it again. It wants to sit with the T mark about an inch (2.5 cm) above the case mark.I can use my hand to line up the T mark to the case mark but then the smaller cam holes don't line up properly. I can get the cam to have proper location but then the mark on the case lines up with the furthest mark north on the flywheel, past the T and F marks on the flywheel.

The timing is definitely out then. It must of jumped the sprocket. You could reset the timing, but I would want to know why this happened. Good luck.

Teardown needed, or just get a new engine.

Teardown it is then.I went to PFS and was overwhelmed by the possible problem. While I was stranded I vigorously kick started it several times and one of the times I encountered a LOT of resistance. I forced it and was able to start and run it but some component is literally sticking somewhere and I need to know the most likely cause so I know where to start.I'm thinking it jumped a tooth or more while I was trying to kickstart it.I was overwhelmed by the crank and other little bits but I was able to tell the timing was off so that's encouraging. Any educated guesses are welcome.

After studying the manual I was wondering if I could remove the rocker arms and reattach the 4 bolt cam holder piece? Then I could rotate the crank and see if I still have something binding in the assembly. If I can do that I can tell if the rocker arms are my problem and I can get a good look at the cam lobes and check their condition.
