<article> Hi guys,
I have a 2003 Honda Dylan 125cc with currently 11,000kms on the dash (about 8,000 miles).
Bought it 2 years ago, never had an issue other than just plain servicing.
Since recently though, when I press/hold the brake lever WHILE STANDING STILL with running engine, there is a weird scraping noise from the back tire area. I don't think it is the brake itself. The noise is a fairly loud and high pitched grinding or scraping sound, but I can't really locate it other than being around the back tire. This is also where the belt and gearbox live, so could be one of those things maybe...
Soon as I release the brake lever, the noise stops; soon as I press it, the noise is unrelenting until I release it again.
I haven't noticed it while driving but with the helmet on it is possible I just can't hear it while driving but it is still there.
Anyone of you knowledgeable gents (or femmes) out there that have an inkling as to what this may be?

Strange. Perhaps check out the pads on the clutch. It's possible they could be worn if dragging slightly at a stand still. The gearbox shouldn't really be turning till you move. Does the rear wheel turn when on the centre stand with no throttle?

Hi, thank you for your reply. The wheel does not spin when on the center stand without throttle.
I'm no expert in these things so a bit guessing here, but it seems like something is turning and when i press the brake lever it blocks and starts making the scraping sound. Sounds a bit like screws and bolts thrown in a blender. Bit afraid to drive it tbh...

If the noise is so bad, it should be easily Identified when checking bits out. It does sound like it needs sorting before riding. Or causing more damage.

Well for one thing, it sounds an awful lot like this but louder: www.youtube.com/shorts/Q82xImLSZFgAnother thing, come to think: when I noticed the sound I shut down and restarted the engine a few times to see if the sound would stick, and very weird but I could suddenly restart the engine by "only" pulling the brake leaver (without pushing the kick start button); this remained the case every time I restarted. Normally I have to push the button to start it. Haven't driven it since but i'll check again tomorrow to try and see what's what. Could it be the starter acting up or broken? I mean, I don't think it's normal that suddenly the kick start button becomes redundant, and it can't be coincidence it coincides with the sudden scraping noise somewhat similar to the one in the above linked video... Thanks for thinking with me fellas.

The starter button must be sticking on then. Or at least making contact. When you pull the brake lever, it will earth the starter solenoid. That's what it's supposed to do. You could test if it is that problem by unplugging the wires from the brake switch. But only do this for testing. You would need to kick start or use the other brake to start it.

Hi,
it is the starter. Stuck or shorted, dunno, but when I press the brake lever the starter kicks in, and with the engine already rolling it starts to grind of course... The bike is due for a checkup anyway so getting it to the mechanic and having it replaced/fixed together with a tuneup.
Thanks for this guys, without yours clear thinking I'd have been all over the place trying to find it.
Cheers mates!
