You guys need to come to Jamaica to see lane-splitting at its best. Scooter, sport-bike, or trail, EVERYBODY lane splits. Our messengers tend to remove their mirrors or fit those that are angled straight up, and then bend the handle bars inward so that the width of the bike is no wider than their shoulders in order to get by the cars. Removing the mirrors is illegal of course but they're easy to put back on when the annual inspection comes around. And no, the cops rarely stop motorcycles for infractions. A motorcyclist would look so strange if he didn't split lanes here. He'd get heckled by car drivers! It's the best feeling in the world when a line of motorcyclists, being led by a cycle cop, meanders to the front of the traffic line at a light. POWER!! <BIG grin>
That said, I lane split at whatever speed I can get by at. At first I only did it when the cars were stopped or coming to a stop, but when you have potholes that are hidden until the last moment by car bodies and smoking trucks that spew exhaust in your face, you NEED to be out front at all times. It's intimidating at first, but you get used to it. The BIGGEST fear I have is with people jay-walking between the stopped cars. They tend to not look up the line and I've nearly creamed a few...
