First thing to do is to check to see if you have a tight one. If they both have play at TDC then they are okay so you eliminate a usual suspect.
.004 will work fine but they might tap loudly and besides beer cans vary. It's better to have sloppy valves then to have one or both with no gap at all. Like I said before, set them with the soda can and if they tap real loud then tighten them up a hair. After you play with them for a bit you'll get a feel for it. I've done so many now I don't even use a gauge anymore. A little tapping is normal. Loud tapping is not.

It's best to do it on a cold engine so morning would be a good time.

thanks for the help but i thought that the valves needed to be at .002 to .003, everybody has said "to check the gap and makes sure its right" setting them to .004 isn't going to matter, i just want to know because the impression i have got from here is that these scooters don't like and thing but spec. settings Dan After many many valve adjustments I use .0025 Any wider and they clatter too much for me..any tighter and the bike is hard to start.

Here's another tip to save you time: Instead of removing the fan shroud, stick a socket through the hole in the center of the fan cover and turn the engine over with that till the cam holes line up to TDC position and then check the valves. There's a plastic hex "nut" on the fan itself that accepts a 13mm socket. Maybe 14mm? Not sure but it works.

A little as a thou loose won't matter. If it ticks a little just tighten it up a tad. I bet it won't though.
