If you are thinking of buying or own a new or used 2011 TaoTao ATM50....read this post entirely! REPLACE the carburetor with one that is NOT sealed in ANY manner as soon as possible and jet it properly!!!!!!The sealed carbs on these are extremely lean making them run HOT which SIEZES the rings in a few thousand miles if that. This TaoTao ATM50 was bought new about a year ago. it was found on the Craigslist Dealer section in Raleigh NC by a foreign exchange faculty member at Duke Univertisy, Durham NC to ride around the Duke Campus area. She never had any service on it besides the oil changed once. It had never even had the seat bucket off of it until i bought it from her 4/15/12. I tested compression before i got it running and it had 140psi. After i got it running i tested it again...barely 110 or so....and was very very hard to start. I put oil down the cylinder and compression shot up to 160. Bad rings. I took her apart and this is what i found..... It has a SEIZED lower compresion ring, scoring on the piston where it rubbed the cylinder and several cracks between the compression ring lands ...and the piston is compressed making the pin impossible to remove without great force. it is obvious to me after having seen the insides of many many of these motors, this came from HEAT. The cooling fan system ducting is in place and the girl who rode it weighed all of 125 lbs. It has no cooling system issues and only has 1200 miles on it. This is the 3rd one I have seen with this problem. This confirms to me its from heat caused by the extremely lean sealed carbs. REPLACE your sealed lean carb with a better unsealed unit and jet it properly to avoid ring damage on your 2011 TaoTao ATM50!! If you are looking at a used one check to see if it has the original sealed carb and do a compression test or have one done by a mechanic. Even if it does have a new carb check compression anyway....or walk away from any 2011 TaoTao ATM50.

Any advice does it have the stock sealed carb on it? the speedometer is the first thing on a taotao to stop workit it happens to them all so you never know whtat the mileage really is. i would do a compression test and see how close to 150psi it is. if its lower than 150psi walk away.

I would suggest starting with an 85 using a uni filter.

are you taking about psi on the tires or engine? Cause I have no idea how to test that. And everything is stock,he has less than 1000 miles on it tho.

He means the reading of a compression test. It's a tester that you screw into the spark plug hole and crank the engine over with the throttle open. It'll give you a reading in psi. If it's low, it won't run strong or may not even start.

zach i have a carb for sale if youd like it and its jetted already, also 400 seems average, but take it for ride, sometimes youll be able to know right off the bat if the rings are gone because of poor carb and jetting. like for ex when riding if the bike starts to jump back and forth speeding up then slowing and slowing then loosing power. also feel the kicker and kick it slightly to feel if there is any ppreassure if no tester.
message me if need carb

I am looking for a carb with correct jets, where to order? Is changing the carb straight forward, one off , new one on, or are there tricks, and I shouldn't attempt. I,m new to scooters. What's the opinion on synthetic oil? I'm going to change my fuel lines, where to order those or is that something you get locally. Thanks for all your expertise!! 2013 taotao speedy 50

tropical, i have carb prejetted that i can best suite to your build. usually the carb is adjusted to your bore, exhaust, intake, alt etc. synthetic oil is usually for high mileage or if youd like after a good break in(lets say if you have more than 500 miles) you could use synthetic. i use 15w-50 in my bigger builds like 50mm bore or bigger

Synthetic oil is good, as long as you're past the break-in period. Wait 500 miles before switching to synthetic. Some say longer.

Synthetic oil is good, as long as you're past the break-in period. Wait 500 miles before switching to synthetic. Some say longer. yeah I agree with brent most places you will read it safe to switch to synthetic after 500 miles breakin. You will also read not to run with the throttle wide open until after that point (500miles) of which most will recomend. I myself will use 10w40 (some say 10w30 in winter 10/40 summer) conventional oil for probably about 1000 miles because i kinda go overkill on some stuff because Medusa is my only ride, if she goes down I back to walking lol. At the same time due to traffic conditions/roads I do have to go Wide Open Throttle for a mile or two or I would create a traffic hazard.....not sure how bad that is for her as i myself do not understand the whole theory behind the breakin other then to set the seals. if you ask these guys for like a carb thats jetted they need to know if you are going to keep everything else stock or not. For example if you plan to change the airfilter, or exhaust or anything that could effect air intake( air filter), exhaust(muffler), etc.....each modifacation can cause you to have to reject the carbs main jet...not complicated.... but if you will keep everthing stock for a while it want require as much tinkering, i do not think. Now guys i think she was wanting a link to like a keihin or walbro (two best carbs) carb & to know weather or not those jets would work or if she would have to change them out for a stock setup? i said those two names just because from my research on here & other places seems you will have less issue from those brands. And tropical if you wish to write a detailed thread about your concerns we have some great mechanics here that can darn near walk you thru anything. The carbs not hard to change & there maybe a video on how to replace the carb in the tech libary in the youtube video section , ITS worth a look lots of great videos on maintance in there.
