I learned by falling. Counter Steering on turns is a must. It's a technique we all know from bicycle riding. When you go into a turn, say a right turn, you turn the bars to the left momentarily, then lean to the right, and vice versa. There are YouTube videos on this, and I urge all scooter folk to learn how to "counter steer" as it is simple and keeps you safe.

I agree!Picture a 'flat tracker' sliding thru the turns, notice his front wheel is opposite the turn?Thats classic counter steering! Its done much less on the street and if practiced, ones turning ability is greatly improved.Study it ,,try it!! :thumb:

I don't do it much consciously, mainly when I'm going faster or just messing around swerving about on a deserted road. The easiest way to understand it or try it consciously IMO is just to ride in a straight line at speed and put gentle pressure on the bars. Push left, turn left... push right, turn right. Do it gently though, because countersteering allows you to turn your scoot in very quickly. Put hard pressure on the bars starting out and you'll bounce off of the ground shortly after. lol
Another good thing to learn about cornering is to look through the turn. Don't look right in front of your scoot.

Agree, look where you want to go! And really, it's all about physics and gravity. When you are changing the center of gravity, like on a turn, you have to compensate, ergo, counter steering. It seems complicated when you describe it, but while riding, it's a simple maneuver and is sort of fun as it gets you into the "lean" thing. A little practice and it's like riding a bicycle. First time I "consciously" tried it, I thought, "oh well, that's easy!"

I've never acquired the ability to use counter steering unconsciously. The other day I was noticing that I mostly use my midsection to initiate moves then do whatever feels right to complete the maneuver.

Cool vid 2Stroked I find it hard to counter steering with out thinking about it on the scooter, yet used to use it off road all the time!

Really? I'm the only one who does or did it without thinking? I kinda figured you had to or you'd crash. I never knew what countersteering was for a long time, as silly as that prob sounds. A friend did the MSF course and said they teach it there. I asked him what they said about it and said it seems odd. Then I rode the next time and... wait a minute... I already do that. lol

I did found myself counter steering unconsciously when flicking between left and right turns around time, but I did have a heavier than usual scooter

Thank you aeroxbud. My son edited that Once you start to countersteer it becomes a natural "habit". Kinda like walking lol. I tell people to go to a spot they know they can "play" around in. Practice sliding and skidding the tire and such. Its fun and it helps you train your brain and body to control your scooter better.

countersteering is part of a motorcycle endorsement class (to get your DL for a motorcycle with >50cc's). Those who can't learn it, won't pass the class.

I just don't see how this can help steering in the *right* direction, sounds like crazy talk to me. lol

Sounded weird to me when I first heard it too bbold. Sometimes it's easier just to try it, rather than over-think it.

bbold...I thought it was crazy too, but then I googled it and saw a few videos. It's all about the center of gravity. Once you understand it and try it, it's kinda fun. Let's say you are making a right turn, you just pull the left handle for an instant, then turn right...you'll immediately go into a nice lean and make the turn easily because you changed the center of gravity with that little "left" movement. I went to an empty parking lot and did figure 8's for an hour
