4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 aren't really going to be that drastic of differences. That's not bad though on the price. I ordered a "tuning set" of weights that came with three each of 2grams all the way up to 13grams off of eBay. Gave me the option of going to pretty much any realistic weight I wanted for testing. I think it was like $35 after shipping from Taiwan.
What was your original roller weight?

I'm going to weigh them when I get them out and do some testing. Will post results.

I worked on a stock GY6 saturday. The guy was happy with the power but it just wouldnt downshift for the hill or after slowing for turns. I was gonna try lighter weights until i realized how darn tight the vari nut is! He did ride it about 10 miles to get here and the engine was pretty warm. I didnt have time to let it cool so i tried a quick shot of quick freeze on the crank. NOPE! Still stuck....Ran outta time, so as a last ditch effort i took the rear pulley section off a parts unit i have and put it on his scooter. I rode it around the block and it shifted better. I told him when we have more time i will get the vari off because im not sure if that will stay stiff and continue to shift proper when it gets hot again. He agreed and was happy i did my best for him in a pinch, shook my hand and left. 45min later he calls me and says it shifts great, and it did wonderful on the hill that gave him troubles before. Just goes to show it could be something as simple as a dirty torque driver or weak torque spring. Im sure his rollers are flats potted too but ya just never know!

That's a good point. A filthy CVT won't work well at all. I clean mine every time I change the oil but most scooter owners don't ever clean theirs. Rubber belt dust is probably one of the worst lubricants you can find.

Yep, thats right . Dont use carb cleaner either. Most have lubricants in them. Brake cleaner or even a good blow with the air compressor. Of course a tear down and cleanup is the best option. Rubber belt dust bad!

Rubber belt dust bad! I remove the variator and clutch and then after a good brushing with an old paint brush to remove the bulk of the crud, a shot of compressed air, then I spray Windex on the engine case and everything and then wipe it with rags. I shoot a small shot of WD40 where the clutch spring is. Just a little 1/2 second squirt. Then I wipe the pulley with a clean dry rag. The variator gets cleaned the same way and never any lube on the rollers. I never tried brake cleaner because I was told that it is bad for the engine seals and rubber in general by a mechanic years ago. Is he wrong?

Good points about dirt and dust. Will check it out, but only have less than 500 miles on it still. Would assume that it is in pretty good shape still.

He could be right? Good point! I know it will dry your hands out something quick! I havent had any troubles with seals or rubber yet but it does make sense...

You know if you only have 500 miles on it, it's not fully broken in yet. You may gain some hill climbing once the rings seat a little better. But I agree with the lighter rollers, I have 6G in mine and it works pretty good.

Still under 100 miles on that.

OK guys...thanks for the inputs. Installed three 5 gram weights and three 4 gram weights. Don't have the exact numbers handy, but using a Garmin GPS top speed went from 38+ to 40+. Using two different hills from a standing start, speed went from 25+ to 27+ and 27+ to 30+. Not bad for a cheap and easy fix. Any ideas on what may improve it more? Torque spring maybe?

Hey Everyone,
My girlfriend has a 50cc Peace sports and everything is stock. She would like to get at least 5mph more speed out of it, especially going up hills. She weighs 130lbs, so what weight rollers would be good? I'm not sure what the stock ones are, so what's typical stock rollers? I have a 150cc Roketa and everything is stock on it also. I weigh 175lbs. so what rollers would you recommend for going up hills? I'm new here so I'm still learning. Thanks.

Hello and welcome! I would recommend weighing the stock rollers if you can then going a 1/2gram to 1g. lighter per roller until you find what you like. One of these tuner kits come in real handy! just make sure to check them before you use them. Sometimes the weights are off a tad. www.provoscooter.com/ruima-variator-roller-tuning-kit-16x13mm.html

I used to have 6.5g and they are just as good. This is with a brand new Gates(not kevlar) belt. From my experience, I think she'd do fine with those.
