I knew it would turn out better than expected. If you can't change the speed limit then maybe you can get the city/county to put aside a few acres for a dedicated motorcycle/scooter racing park with a drag strip and a road course. They can sell track time and have a snack bar and some vending machines to pay for it. Congressmen love earmarking projects like that.

My lawyer said if the scooter/moped laws get "adjusted" before i get sentenced, this may never even make it back into the court room.?. He said it might not anyway, but didnt want to get my hopes up or mislead me. I liked his honesty! Most of the att. ive hired in the past would say stuff like that knowing it was all BS in the long run. Its different with this guy, he has been on our side of the desk.

That would be best wouldn't it. 25mph is just dangerous IMO. Even 30 is slow here, but they keep the speed adjusted to the limitations allowed too, no helmet, or motorcycle training required...with more speed allowed, the rules change a lot.

IMO a license plate and insurance would be nice! The problem around here was a bunch of local drunks were scooting around all hammered and crashing into each other, cars, trucks, ditches you name it. Thats when the cops decided the best way to "ween" em out is to pull them all over for anything we can. I dont think a DL for a scooter is the way to go, but if we had plates and insurance i think that would be good.
Oh, and raise the limit to at least 35MPH!!!! 25 is dangerously slow behind lil Miss drivntext, or Mr.IMAbigass truck or yer ass!

35mph would be good. I don't know how you keep em from getting stolen without plates required. License required here, but a lot of scooter riders don't know that either. Lots of ignorance out there. I've actually heard "You mean I could get a ticket for going through that stop sign?" Heard that while relating my nephews loss of drivers license for just that on a scooter. They think of them like bicycles. The older couple riding 30mph side by side on a busy country highway without moving over doesn't help our image either. Makes the IMAbigasstruck guy even more likely to assume he aughta pass me, even when I'm 10 over already.

2strokd, great to hear some good news from you on this matter. Now is the great good guy attny going to rob you? By that I mean is he draining the bank account? Will we need to make some more contributions to the scooter legal defense fund?

My States law says this: "You must be age 16 or older to operate a moped on North Carolina highways or public vehicular areas. A driver license is not required, and the moped does not have to be registered, inspected or covered by liability insurance. A motorcycle safety helmet is required by law when operating a moped on North Carolina highways. A moped cannot have a motor of more than 50 cubic centimeters, an external shifting device or have the capability of exceeding 30 miles per hour on a level surface. " There is a difference in the wording. Indiana's laws say if you go 25.1 mph you are in violation. My states laws have some wiggle room. "a flat surface" implies one may, on ocassion, travel over 30 mph, say down hill. I would love to know their definition of "highway" but i cannot find it..gee i wonder why. probably so they can leave it open to interpretation by the DA in a manner that will lead to the most profit. Wikipedia say this: A highway is a main road for travel by the public between important destinations, such as cities, large towns, and states. Highway designs vary widely and can range from a two-lane road without margins to a multi-lane, grade-separated expressway, freeway, or motorway. There is a new law that went into effect in 2008 that says a helmet must be worn on ALL state maintained roads but the NCDMV still says what you posted (Highway). I ride with no helmet in my subdivision since it is not a highway and the DMV says a helmet must be worn on the highway. I hate :censored: cops. reading this thread just makes my blood boil! :swear:

hey 2strokd it sounds like we're fishin in the same boat (no DL an can't get one for another year) but i haven't caught a load of sh!t yet. here in Michagin the law for a moped (scooter) is under 50cc, automatic, and limited to 30mph on a flat level road, good thing is, try to find a flat LEVEL road around here. nice big GRAY area there, i've had cops pass me when i'm doin close to 45mph down M-15 (55mph speed limit), and thru speed traps where the speed limit was 35 & 45mph with no problems so far (knock on wood). around here the jail and courts are so full they had a story on the news that they weren't even giving out tickets for DWLS, and other minor offences. the story aired two nights in a row just before a vote to pass some $$ millage to reopen the city lock-up, good scare tactic to bad it didn't work lol.

And yeah, 25mph is just insane. Legislation has been proposed here in NC to basically eradicate scooters by turning them all into motorcycles in the eyes of the "law" (dl, ins. and everything required). It has not passed but i fear that the more scooters that get put on the road, eventually the "law" will be super pissed about all the money they are missing out on and find a way to push it through. its all about the money. requiring a drivers license, insurance and everything doesn't make us, them or anyone any safer. I like the way Brent put it, dont assume someone else is speaking up. We all should take this seriously and contact our representatives and let them know in a nice way that if they vote for any legislation that jeopardies our hobby/passion/basic transportation/FREEDOM....then we vote them OUT. I have contacted mine and i pray everyone here does too! OMG! I put "changing moped law" in google and the FIRST ONE on the list is LAFAYETTE, Ind. ! That place is scooter HELL. www.wlfi.com/dpp/news/news_wlfi_lafayette_moped_laws_200811131201_rev1""There's too many of them on the street that should not be there...and well, I just don't like them," said Jim Fain, of Lafayette. Well I dont like your car jacka$$. :bfg: Well anyway, I hope everything works out but if I lived there I would move!
