You should try some acid to remove that rust,,"Naval Jelly"(phosphoric acid) or Muriatic acid(hydrochloric acid) work very well.This stuff can burn flesh and eyes very badly though!Wear rubber gloves and eye protection,,brush it on,wait 10 minutes and rub it with ScotchBrite,rinse in HOT water,repeat till it shines! Here is a recent pipe I built,1st pic is as welded with scale and blued metal; This is after acid wash several times;

Thanks for the tip 190! Nice pipe on that YZ85(?)! But the pipe was rusted so bad it had rustly flakes so i thought i needed to remove that before i start using chemicals. I wonder if i can get naval jelly here in Holland. Right now i painted the pipe with Noverox it converts rust into something else.

This week i was going to mount the crank. Heat the cases to at least 110 degrees celcius When the bearing sits in the case i heat the inner ring with this little gas soldering pen. Voilá The epoxy got a bit discolored after heating the cases. I don't think its bad. I'm very happy with this trench I fucked up the other side. Didn't put enough heat in the other case, and the bearing didn't drop in fully. Now i need a new bearing, it will come in somewhere this weekend.

Oh, and i finished painting the frame It was quite rusty in the back where the fuel tank sits. I first used a wire wheel to mechanically remove all rust. After that i used 'oxalic'(?) acid to chemically remove all the invisible rust. I bought some special marine primer with anti rust pigments to use as base coat. Put on two thick layers with a brush. I used a spray can with anti rust in the little nooks and crannies. Let that cure for a week or so and today finished it off with two spray cans of satin black. I think that thing won't rust for the next 20 years!

Previous week i dropped off my subframe at the local scootshop to get the bushings replaced. They where old and cracked so i had them replaced. Just got a call it's done. Also the new crank bearing came in so im gonna pick it up this afternoon or somewhere tomorrow. Hopefully i can close the cases and get the engine built up.
The next thing i need to do is get some new inner tubes and fork oil for the front fork. Any tips on which viscosity i need? I was guess 10W is whats in it normally. Im looking for more sporty handling. Maybe W15 would be better?

Yes try 15 and start low. If its soft add a bit more until its like you want it to feel

Does the volume of oil in the forks affect anything more than just the rigidity? I mean...is the resistance through the oil linaer through the travel of the tubes? Or does it get somewhat (more, or less) progressive when changing the volume of oil?

I think so, I think the weight and volume effect handling... Then again, you might be better off getting advice from a circuit racer, not a drag head

Alright, i have the subframe back with new bushings and finally have the cases closed up. It always feels like a victory when you have the crank mounted without any problems and it spins freely right the first time. This time i got the temps right and everything just slided right in. But then the left seal ended my victory spree. It was so tight around the crank it disformed when i gave it a wack... Wasn't happy AT ALL! Sooo tomorrow back again to the shop to get a new seal. I'll post some pics when i have the seal in.
