Hi everyone, I've been hanging around this site for quite a while but have never posted anything. A testament to the search button I guess.. Anyway.. I have recently bought a 1999 Honda Dio running an AF34E engine. I got it cheap since it was an insurance write off, but the only damage being cosmetic and a busted air box. Bit of a score. My primary goals for it are to get it registered and back on the road for daily use. My secondary goal is to work the engine up to producing some good power and speed.
Ive looked around on the net and have found the Honda horizontal motors to have pretty light aftermarket support, with most parts available being quite pricey. So my question is, has anyone had much to do with these motors to get some power on the cheap and are there any parts that I can swap/adapt from other scoots? I am an apprentice mechanic so have access to workshop equipment, but dont have much experience with 2 stroke engines. Any and all help is much appreciated!
Cheers

Very nice scoot, and congrats on the find. Try jiangwayne.com for AF34 parts for cheaper.

Thanks guys!
I hanvent seen those sites before and the prices are pretty good. Cheers!
I have had a bit of a tinker today after fixing a flat front tyre. I noticed the GY6 and the AF34E outer variator pulley were pretty much the same with the AF34E one having a step on its inside edge and the GY6 one being 3 piece. The GY6 one would make the belt ride higher on the pulley. So I gave the swap a go, the GY6 pulley was a bit tight on the spline but went on fine with a bit of encouragement. I took the scoot for a run afterwards and it topped out at 69kmh on gps, 8kph above before the swap. As a bonus, the kick start and starter motor engage perfectly!

Well, I have to admit, its been a very long time since I was on here last!
The Dio has been in storage for quite a while and has only been on the road for a week now. I have moved from quite a rural area to a bit more urban so the wee 50cc has become a whole lot more useful.
I have taken it for a couple runs now with a pretty decent one today and it seems pretty sweet. There was some noise coming from the final drive area so I opened it up, gave it a clean and regreased the bearings. I also changed the final drive oil with some Redline Shock Proof oil I had handy.
I took it for a quick run afterwards and it ran well.

Welcome Smokey! Nice find, I must say. The'99 Dio 3-ZX, if that's what you have, had a nice Honda adaptation with 7.2 HP! Besides the nice drive system swap...I would simply clean up the whole combustion system, from intake to exhaust spewing stinger, then tune it up to a current spec and go from there! The cylinder arrangement is better suited to more power than the verticals. Keep us up to speed! A good carb and a bit of timing advance will impress you.

Thanks! I have to say that when I bought the scoot the information I got said it was a '99 production, but my registration paperwork says its a 2002 bike.. A little confusing.. It probably is a 2002.
I dont think its a ZX. It looks like a plain jane drum braked version. The ZX looks pretty sweet though.
I have a pod filter on it at the moment since the original air box was busted when i got it. I have had to almost completely tape it up for it to run properly. I kind of think an up jetting to suit the intake flow and a bit of tweaking with the timing could really open it up.
Im looking at giving it some new variator rollers since the current ones have some flat spots. The rear tyre also has some cracking and degradation.
What sort of carb would be a good swap?
